Outrageous! Aussie café charges mum $15 for 'lazy' takeaway meal that has everyone talking

A frustrated mum has sworn off a popular Sydney café in the wake of her experience with a takeaway avocado toast order, claiming she had to ‘assemble’ the meal herself while trying to manage a toddler.

The mum unboxed her $15 meal from Harry's in Bondi and found two slices of plain toast along with two avocado quarters, still encased in their skin.

The patron was understandably taken aback by receiving the components of the popular meal in her hands, without it actually being ready for immediate consumption.

She took to social media on Friday to voice her perplexity, asking, ‘Am I out of touch or is this normal these days to be served avo on the side (still in its skin) rather than smeared on the toast?’

She added, ‘It cost $15 and honestly, for that price, I would have been better off going to the supermarket and buying a loaf of bread and an avo and putting it together myself.’

She further explained that she attempted to transfer the avocado onto the toast using her fingers but without much success.

She initially didn't inspect the contents of the box, as she wasn't expecting such an arrangement, but she did return to voice her grievances, claiming that the staff she spoke to at the café was far from apologetic and asserted, ‘That's how we always do it.’

Frustrated, the mum declared that she wouldn't be returning to the café, especially during a cost-of-living crisis when many are struggling financially.

Others were also taken aback by the meal the mum received, with one person labelling it as ‘lazy.’

Another person commented, ‘You could have purchased at least 2 loaves of bread and 2 avocados for that. Beyond ridiculous,’ echoing the sentiments of many others.

Yahoo News Australia reached out to Harry's Café for a response but as of the publish date of this article, no comment has been provided.

Aussies have been growing increasingly frustrated with rising food prices, often exacerbated by additional surcharges imposed by various establishments.

ANZ Senior Economist Adelaide Timbrell confirmed that ‘the price of restaurant meals rose 6.5 per cent year-on-year to the June quarter, while the price of takeaway food rose 9.1 per cent over that time.’

For comparison, a loaf of sourdough bread can be bought for approximately $6.50 at Woolworths or Coles, and avocados are available for about $1.30 each. It’s only natural that the café's pricing would be higher, but we here at the SDC have been left scratching our heads at the ‘some assembly required’ nature of this menu item.

In the past, a customer also criticised a Melbourne café for charging $19 for vegemite and avocado toast, while others expressed disbelief over the cost of a coffee and bagel.
