Outrage over 'ridiculous' Woolworths price hike: Why is olive oil so expensive now?

Many supermarket staples have been hit with a price rise lately–and it seems olive oil has become the latest victim of inflation.

Recent reports of a price hike for a one-litre Woolworths’ home brand olive oil have sparked outrage from Aussie shoppers. The price has skyrocketed to $10–up $1.20 in just 12 months!

So what’s behind this price hike? The hot temperatures in Spain–where the olives for the Woolworths bottle are sourced from–have meant a reduction in supply. This, along with an 'unusually cold and short' growing season for Australian suppliers, has increased production costs.

On the other hand, according to a spokesperson from Coles, another price hike is likely later in the year. Though, it is unclear if it is because of the same factors–such as hot weather in the Mediterranean region where they source their olives–or other markets anticipated to be at play. Olive oil at Coles is currently priced at $12.

Olive oil doesn’t have to be expensive, though: savvy shoppers can often score discounts on premium brands in the supermarket. Alternatively, you can check out the cost per volume of different product sizes in the aisle–larger containers are often cheaper!

Alternate Less Expensive and Healthy Cooking Oils

With olive oil prices heading north, it might be time to explore other budget- and health-friendly options! If you have been embracing one brand of oil in the kitchen too long, it might be the right time to diversify your pantry. High-quality oils that cost less per litre can still make your food taste amazing–your heart will thank you too!

Avocado oil has decreased in price recently and is packed with nourishing vitamins. It has a lovely creamy taste and is great for high-heat cooking, making it a perfect sub for olive oil. Avocado oil is currently on sale at Woolworths.

Then we've got canola oil, a solid all-rounder with a neutral taste. It's often cheaper than olive oil and has less saturated fat than other cooking oils.

Don't disregard the good ol' sunflower oil, either. This budget-friendly option has a high smoke point, making it perfect for frying. While it isn’t as nutrient-rich as olive oil, it contains vitamin E and Omega-6 fatty acids, which offer great benefits for your heart. Its price has recently dropped from $4.50 to $3.95 at Woolworths!

Key Takeaways
  • The price of Woolworths' one-litre bottle of olive oil has increased to $10, up $1.20 in just 12 months.
  • The price hike is due to adverse weather conditions in olive-producing countries like Spain, impacting supply.
  • Coles announced that due to the 'worst harvest in 20 years' another price hike is likely later in the year.
  • Savvy shoppers recommended checking other stores such as the Reject Shop for cheaper prices, and looking at cost per volume on supermarket shelf tags.

Well Australia grows its own olive oil. Plenty of brands even in Coles and Woolworths, might be a bit pricey but if you must have it support locals or buy it direct from the supplier. Would never touch canola. Rubbish that wasn't ever meant for human consumption. Macadamia oil is good too. Any seed oils can cause inflammation in the body. Just use butter or lard. Contrary to popular belief won't give you heart disease

The problem with canola and sunflower oil they are highly processed and if you have any inflammatory issues, they’re not a good choice if using a lot. If you are lucky enough to have a bulk wholefoods store, take your empty container and refill. Or try farmers markets, maybe a bit pricey but so much better for you.

I have never used Olive Oil as I much prefer Rice bran Oil for the flavour by buying it in a large bottle it decants well for ease of use.

I have found the supermarkets are doing their price drop products but hiking up the amount they are dropping on other products. Dog food, deodorant, vitamins and now olive oil have gone through the roof

I bought Rice bran oil once and found it came from Asia.
So! what's the problem? At least unlike the frozen -veg from NZ the rice bran oil doesn't hide its origin. I never buy frozen from NZ as it was a way for China to get their sub-standard veg into Australia. We don't need that when so much beautiful fresh stuff is around.

I don’t buy anything that comes out of NZ for that reason ,as it bypasses all Australian regulations. I only buy Product of Australia as its all Australian, and Australian fresh produce .

Canola oil is from rape seed and is irradiated which is NOT healthy but cheap. Extra virgin Olive oil should be in dark containers. At present Coles has Australian olive oil at reasonably priced.
