One other vegetable has stolen the spotlight from lettuce after hitting an all-time high of $42 per kilo – “I actually gasped!”

Just when we thought things couldn’t get any worse, the universe mocks us and makes it a point to prove that it can! It seems that more necessities are hopping on this year’s list of escalating prices. And at this point, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to scramble for more ways to save money in order to stay afloat.

A Woolworths shopper shared her shock upon discovering the latest vegetable that surpassed the expensive lettuce craze, hailing the sudden price hike as ‘ridiculous’.

Posting the revelation on TikTok, Melbourne migration lawyer Traci Chen was left speechless when she saw that the price of snow peas had soared to a whopping $42.80 per kilo at her local Woolworths store.

Back in 2021, snow peas retailed for about $6.99 a kilo, meaning that the current price is a 512 per cent increase. The inflated price followed only weeks after the price of lettuce, cucumbers, Asian greens, and capsicum soared to the heavens.

The anxiety-inducing price tag was pointed out by TikTok user @migrationlawyer, who previously went viral after noticing the price of a cup of coffee in Sydney increased to $9.

“OMG, first the $9 coffee, now this,” Chen captioned in her video. “Let’s see how much a small handful costs,”

After shoving a few pieces of snow peas in a plastic bag and proceeding to weigh them, the self-serve cash register displayed that 142 grams of the vegetable cost Chen $6.08.

As a response to one of the users who left a comment on her video, the shopper teased that snow peas are now the “same price as steak”.

Several users were taken aback by the absurd price hike, with one saying: “Sooner or later, Lobster will be cheaper than salad!”

“If I needed an excuse to not eat vegetables, this would be it.” joked another.

“That’s it – I’m buying seeds and planting my own veggies.” exclaimed a third.

A fourth suggested: “Plant your own! I promise it's worth it. Watching them grow is so cute and you can also yield lots if you take care of them well.”

“Whaaaaaat?!” wrote another.

“I actually gasped - and then again when you took some and weighed them!” said one more.

Woolworths General Manager of Fruit and Vegetables Paul Turner touched on the issue and clarified that the supermarket is trying their best to work with their suppliers to improve availability.

“We know our customers choose Woolworths because we’re committed to providing great quality fresh food all year-round,” Mr Turner began.

“We’re continuing to keep our customers updated on the availability of key fruit and vegetable varieties that have been impacted by poor growing conditions,”

“While challenges continue, our Iceberg lettuce and spinach growers are telling us customers can expect to see improved availability over the next month,”

“Many growers are still experiencing the effects of heavy rain from earlier this year. This has pushed back the planting and harvesting of crops, with reduced availability continuing to be exacerbated by cooler temperatures and low levels of sunlight,”

He continued: “As always, we thank our customers for their continued understanding as we work closely with our growers and do all we can to improve supply as quickly as possible.”

Well, we’re definitely bidding farewell to snow peas for the time being. Do you have some tips up your sleeve that help you combat the rising cost of living? Share them with us in the comments!

Perhaps we should avoid all the cost of these products & substitute them with soft grass in our salads until prices come down & there is a better supply of the same. May be just as nutritious if cows eat it.

I was in an IGA in Port Fairy, Vic on Saturday and their Green beans were $38.99/kg and Snow & snap peas were $50.50/kg. How do they justify it???

Here in the West we saw on the news that all the flooding in the East & the shortage of vegetables will put a strain on the humble potato & this will be next to rise in price, despite the fact we are not affected by supplies of them. Where's the sense in that fact?
