Old public phone
I well remember using these. when we were first married we didn’t have a house phone, mobiles didn’t exist, so whenever hubby was sick I used to have to go to the nearest public phone, about three blocks away, to ring his work and let them know. He did the same when I was sick. I used to regularly ring my mum and a couple of friends for a chat as well on this phone. When I was nursing the nurses home I lived in had two pay phones we could use if we wanted to ring up. We had to put coins in them the same as public phones. There was always a demand for these phones as about 60/70 nurses lived in the home at any given time. So our conversations were generally pretty short. We could also receive calls on these phones, the calls were transferred via the hospital switchboard. There are still a few public phone boxes in the town I live in, one about three blocks from our home. I believe they are there for the safety of anyone who needs to use them, and I believe they are now free for at least local calls. This stops them being vandalised for the coins they used to hold.
