Norwegian princess ditches royal duties to start a new life with her shaman fiancé

If you think that headline is bizarre, wait until you hear the rest of the story, folks.

Recently, news broke that 51-year-old Princess Martha Louise of Norway got engaged to her fiancé, a self-proclaimed shaman named Durek Verrett. This means that she needs to relinquish her official duties to get married.

While that might not sound exactly newsworthy, details regarding their engagement and the princess’s future endeavours sparked the interest of many on social media…

Princess Martha Louise is the 51-year-old daughter of King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway. In June of this year, she got engaged to Durek Verrett, an American celebrity shaman and the inventor of an (allegedly) healing amulet that costs $222. The ‘Spirit Optimiser’ as he calls it, apparently helped him overcome COVID-19. (Please don’t substitute alternative medicine for qualified medical advice.)

Their engagement caused heated discussions in Norway after the ‘shaman’ suggested in his book that cancer was a choice... Norwegian media also kept a close eye on the ‘sixth-generation shaman’ after he said he was a ‘hybrid species of reptilian’. But wait, it gets weirder.

As a result of, um, Durek’s eccentricity – coupled with the princess’s long-standing fascination with alternative treatments and spirituality – the Norwegian Royal Family faced criticism from their constituents. In a poll released in September, 17 per cent of Norwegians now have a lower opinion of their Royal Family.

A spokesperson for the palace said: ‘The princess is relinquishing the role as royal patron and will not be representing the royal house at present.’ However, she will keep her ‘princess’ title, following the King’s wishes.

The spokesperson also revealed that once married, Durek will become a member of the Royal Family but won’t represent the monarchy – nor will he get an official title.

The princess (who claims that she can talk to angels) already lost her honorific ‘Her Royal Highness’ title in 2002 after choosing to work as a clairvoyant.

The couple also agreed to refrain from associating with the Royal Family in social media and other commercial activities.

‘This is intended to draw a dividing line that more clearly separates commercial activity from the royal house of Norway,’ said the spokesperson.

The spokesperson also reaffirmed their stance on science-based medicine, and stressed the importance of ‘established medical knowledge and scientific research’.

The princess explained that, while she was aware of the ‘importance of research-based knowledge’, she also said she believes that there are ‘components of a good life and sound physical and mental health that may not be easy to sum up in a research report’.

Lastly, Princess Martha said it was important to distinguish herself as a private person and as a member of the Royal Family. She also hopes that her personal views will be treated as her own and ‘without others having to answer for them’.
