Noisy environment? This trick can help make your phone calls clearer!

Ah, the sounds of the city–if you ever find yourself travelling or in the bustling heart of any major city, you know just how loud it can be.

Cars tooting their horns, people chattering at top volume; in short, it can be a less-than-pleasing experience when attempting to make a call or have a conversation.

Fortunately, there might be a trick that can help!

If you've got an iPhone XR, iPhone XS, or later, as well as iOS 14.4 or later installed on your device, you could have access to a useful trick that can help you stop surrounding noises from interfering with your conversation.

The trick involves a feature called 'Mic Mode' that was originally released with Apple's iOS 15. With it, you can tune out surrounding noise and ensure that your partner on the other end of the line can focus on your voice.

To access this 'Mic Mode', all you need to do is swipe down from the top-right corner of your screen during a call. Once you've opened the Control Center, select the 'Mic Mode' button, which you can find at the top right of the screen. This will give you access to what's known as the 'Voice Isolation' feature.

This nifty tool can focus and emphasise your voice while blocking out general background noise. It's the perfect trick for clear and uninterrupted conversations, even in noisy locations!

If you'd rather focus on the sound environment that the recipient is meant to hear, there's a 'Wide Spectrum' feature in the 'Voicemode section' for FaceTime, where your voice takes second priority to background noise.

Of course, not everyone has an iPhone, so if you don't have the necessary specifications to access the 'Mic Mode' tool, there's another practical trick to keep in mind: slowing down your conversation so that you don't have to compete as much against background noise. There’s also the option of moving someplace more quiet, but that’s not always possible.

But if you have an iPhone, you'll also want to be on the lookout for iOS 17, which will be coming out in September this year.

This upgraded system boasts a ton of new features enabled by powerful AI technology.

For example, this new language model can not only provide better recognition of the words you're saying but also allow you to go back to the original word if the system mistakenly autocorrects it.

In addition, you can now start dictation without having to say 'Hey Siri' as the virtual assistant now responds to plain 'Siri'. iOS 17 also comes with a 'Check In' feature, meant to help users notify their family or friends once they've arrived at their intended location - ideal for those who are planning to travel solo!

On top of that, Apple also moved the 'End Call' button to the lower right corner of the screen, making it easier than ever to quickly hang up. iMessage apps have also been consolidated so they appear in a single place above the message area.

This will save you time when trying to access your most frequented apps, such as audio messages, photos and location data, as they will all display at once.

Key Takeaways

  • Apple has a feature that tunes out surrounding noise during calls, enabling your voice to be heard more clearly.
  • This feature, called 'Mic Mode', was introduced with iOS 15 and is accessible with iPhone XR, iPhone XS models and later, as well as iOS 16.4 or later.
  • The upcoming iOS 17, set for release in September, will introduce new features, including AI-powered dictation and the ability to activate Siri by saying only 'Siri'.
  • Other changes include a 'Check In' tool allowing users to inform family and friends when they've safely arrived at a destination, iMessage apps stored in one place and a moved 'end call' button in the phone app.

Though there may be some adjustment period needed for the shift to iOS 17, this update might be exactly what you need to make your phone calls even easier and more enjoyable!

Won't help me - i have ALL my devices locked down for the camera's & mic's etc for security reasons and in the case of the phones so they don't 'listen' in to any thing said around them setting the damn browser crazy - Features not needed for me on a phone.

Won't help us either. We have plain, uncomplicated Androids.
Hubby is OK. He has the phone feeding directly to his hearing aid.
I don't care enough to invest in a new phone.
