'No gluten in plastic': Customer's unsettling find sparks social media outrage

Whenever we reach out to convenient pantry staples, the last thing you expect from them is dissatisfaction.

Yet, this was the reality for one Woolworths shopper, whose 'weird find' sparked a conversation about food safety and customer service expected from supermarkets.

The incident unfolded when a man from Lismore found an unsettling addition in a pack of Woolworths' garlic bread—a transparent piece of plastic.

The plastic with garlic spread smears was a sight that would turn anyone's stomach.

The man took to social media to express his dismay, humorously noting that he 'usually prefers my bread without foreign pieces of plastic contained within them'.

Woolworths quickly responded online and acknowledged the situation.

The supermarket offered a refund or replacement for the inconvenience caused.

However, the shopper's reaction was one of frustration rather than appeasement.

'The point of bringing this to your attention was not to achieve a refund or replacement; it was to raise the quality/contamination of your food,' the man responded.

The man turned down the supermarket's offer.

Woolworths, on the other hand, assured the customer that 'the most relevant team' had been informed of the situation.

Some Aussies felt the shopper's response was overblown.

'To begin with, you were actually quite rude, so I think the way they responded was quite pleasant of them', one commenter said.

Others stood by the man's stance, and some shared their preference for homemade garlic bread.

'This sight helps me know what to purchase and what to look out for,' another comment read.

A third humorously said, 'No gluten in plastic'.

This is not the first time Woolworths has faced scrutiny over its quality control processes.

In a previous article, a shopper found a potentially toxic eucalyptus leaf in a bag of spinach.

Another shopper discovered a dead frog in her spinach dinner.

The supermarket addressed both incidents, which led to investigations with their suppliers.

These incidents raise questions about the rigorous quality checks that the supermarket claims to conduct on its produce.

When shopping, check your food items carefully before consumption.

Feel free to reach out to the retailer if something is amiss.
