Nicole Kidman’s tense interaction with Salma Hayek raises eyebrows: ‘Don’t touch me’

When celebrities grace the red carpet, it's usually all glamour and poise, but sometimes, their flawless image crumbles, exposing hidden tensions.

Such was the case at the Balenciaga show during Paris Fashion Week, where Nicole Kidman and Salma Hayek's encounter turned heads for all the wrong reasons.

The incident, which involved a seemingly minor physical interaction, has since spiralled into a full-blown controversy, with a surprising financial twist adding fuel to the fire.

Nicole Kidman found herself in an uncomfortable situation when Salma Hayek, actress and wife of François-Henri Pinault, appeared to touch her while posing for photographs.

The moment, captured on camera, showed Kidman walking off in what seemed like a huff, leaving onlookers and fans to speculate wildly about the cause of the apparent discord.

Salma Hayek's husband, François-Henri Pinault is the CEO of Kering, a luxury goods behemoth that owns a portfolio of high-end brands including Gucci, Saint Laurent, and Balenciaga.

Nicole Kidman, on the other hand, was named a brand ambassador for Balenciaga in December 2023.

This professional relationship with Balenciaga places Kidman in a somewhat subordinate position to Hayek, at least within the context of the fashion industry's hierarchy.

Some online commentators have suggested that Hayek was attempting to direct Kidman for the photographs.

'Oh that “don’t touch me” from Nicole to Salma at a brand show owned by her husband, that Balenciaga contract is in danger I fear,' Fashion commentator Louis Pisano said.

Some speculated that Salma was playing the role of the boss' wife when she tried to direct Nicole during the photoshoot.

‘Nicole is an employee of Salma’s husband so yes, Salma gets to boss her around. Besides, Nicole is there working for Salma’s husband,’ one wrote.

The incident follows after Kidman had recently experienced the loss of her mother, Janelle, and had been absent from the public eye while mourning.

Her appearance at the Balenciaga show was one of her first since the bereavement.

Adding to the complexity is Balenciaga's own controversial history, particularly the 2022 scandal involving children holding teddy bears in bondage gear in its Christmas campaign.

Both Kidman's continued association with the brand and Hayek's silence on the matter have drawn criticism.
