Never use THIS PRODUCT on your carpet, says pro cleaner

Turns out, there is one common household cleaning product that you should never use to get stains out of your carpet, according to a cleaning professional.

Kacie Stephens, a Melbourne-based professional cleaner and the mastermind behind the cleaning company The Big Clean Co, revealed that whenever your carpet becomes the victim of spills, splashes, and messy accidents, you should never use dishwashing liquid alone to clean it.

On the company's official Instagram account, Ms Stephens said that while dishwashing liquid is an extremely versatile cleaning product that can be used for many cleaning tasks around the house, it should not be used on its own on carpets.

"Do not be tempted to remove your own stains with dishwashing liquid," she said in the clip. Ms Stephens explained that the residue in dishwashing liquid cannot be completely removed from the carpet and you can be left with large, pale circles instead.

"When you do a home hack on your carpet, you aren’t removing all that residue," added Ms Stephens. "So along comes a pro, and that dishwashing liquid residue mixes with the high-pressure water going in and hellooo foam!"

Professional carpet cleaners use a process called hot water extraction – which uses high-pressure hot water going in and a powerful vacuum sucking it out – to deep clean carpets.

"You can’t hide those hacks you tried before you called a professional carpet cleaner… Your carpet reveals the secrets."

Considering most Aussies probably aren't getting their carpets cleaned professionally every time a stain or spill occurs, Ms Stephens recommends blotting stains (not rubbing them!) in the meantime.

Resist the urge to immediately start scrubbing because this will only drive the stain down into the carpet. Instead, gently dab stains with a cleaning solution and a clean cloth, paper towel, or sponge.

And always blot from the outer edge of the stain inward toward the centre! You do not want to spread the stain across the carpet further.

I changed all the carpets in my house to either tile or wood as I was totally fed up with trying to keep my pale coloured carpets clean and stain free. Cleaning is now a breeze.;):)
