Nana's Apron

Remember when your mum or nan would wear a beautiful apron before cooking? Back in the day, it wasn’t just about cooking—it was about making the moment special. Those aprons, with their lovely floral patterns and handy pockets, were like a signature of love and care. They were part of what made the kitchen feel so warm and cosy. Do you still have one of those aprons tucked away? Or maybe you have a favourite memory of mum or nan wearing theirs? Share your apron stories with us—we’d love to hear them!

My paternal grandmother would wash, iron and hang up her aprons like another piece of clothing. She wore them while doing housework too, not just cooking.

They were like a uniform for all good housewives but they did protect their clothes as well and had to be quickly removed if the doctor or someone important was calling in to see you!

Yes. My mum would wear an apron while cooking back in the day. It wasn’t a full length like these ones but just from the waist down and tied around the waist.
We were taught to cook and sew from a very young age; I also had a number of 'half' aprons like your mum which i wore for making bread, cakes, scones, jams and pickles etc...we called them pinnies and i made them myself on a little hand driven sewing machine, it was a treat to go to the markets once a month a pick out material and embroidery threads. Thankyou for reminding me of the simple pleasures of many years past..now i don't remember the last time i even sewed on a button🥧🍞
