Mum stuns social media after she revealed her little-known trick for storing onions, claims that it helps her cut down grocery bills

Onions are a staple in many kitchens around the world. But they can be expensive, especially if you're buying them in small quantities.

One mum has found a clever way to save money on onions, and she's gone viral on Facebook for it.

Her tip? Simply buy a few extra bags of onions when they're on sale, and then dice and freeze them. That way, you'll always have a supply on hand and you won't have to pay full price for them.

"One of my little tricks to save a bit of money. Onions were $1.20/kg a couple of weeks ago so I grabbed 2 extra bags than normal," the mum wrote along with a photo of the chopped bags of onions ready for freezing.

"I've just cut up 1kg of onions for the freezer."

The post has received more than 800 reactions and over 200 comments from other users who were quick to praise the mum for her little-known tip.

One user said: "Fantastic idea! I actually just bought a quick sealed bag of onions despite not using them very often. I am going to do this tonight!"

"A great save to prep those cheaper bigger bags of onions, only cry once instead of every time," another added.

Others admitted that they have been doing this trick, backing the mum's claim that it can reduce grocery bills.

One user shared: "I sometimes dice and microwave them in a little olive oil and then freeze. And as a contact lens wearer, I don't cry."

"Great idea! I always double bag so there are no odours in the freezer," another advised.

Several users shared that the trick also works with other vegetables, not just onions.

One person wrote: "I do this with mushrooms, tomatoes, capsicum, celery. Basically, anything I put in a stew. All goes soft anyway when we cook it."

"I used to buy a 10kg bag of onions for $10 and cut them all up and freeze them and sometimes my fruit shop sells 20kg bags of horse carrots for $5 and I chop and freeze those as well," another added.

Meanwhile, one person claimed that it is better to dehydrate the onions, store them in airtight containers, and rehydrate them when needed instead of freezing them.

"They are amazing dehydrated and save freezer room," the user advised.

One woman pointed out that there is some evidence to suggest that onions may be the next vegetable to experience a shortage, so this money-saving tip could come in handy for many people.

Regardless of your preferred storage method, learning how to preserve and store fresh produce is definitely a valuable skill these days, especially since the impacts of inflation on the prices of essentials seem to be getting worse.

So if you're looking to save a few dollars on your weekly grocery bill, consider following this mum's lead and stocking up on onions next time they're on sale.

Onions are usually around $2.00 per kg. On special, they are usually around $1.20/kg. Given the cost of resealable sandwich bags, I would imagine that any savings on the onions would be balanced by the cost of the plastic bags. It would probably be cheaper to just buy onions as needed and save the environment from all that plastic. Also, I hardly think that freezing vegetables is a "little-known" hack.
