Mum slammed online for putting her toddler in heels: 'It's just a joke'

There are times when children should not be allowed to participate in particular fashion trends...

After posting a video of her baby daughter walking, a mum has experienced the full force of the backlash that social media users can bring.

If you're curious about what made so many people angry with her, the video clip in question shows her daughter walking around in pink socks and blue high heels, which viewers claim can be 'damaging' to growing feet.

In the now-viral TikTok video which has amassed over a hundred thousand views, the mum clarified that she bought the shoes from Build-A-Bear Workshop, and the video was just supposed to be a joke.

'The shoes are soft, and her hands were being held,' she further explained.

Despite this, not everyone was persuaded. Even if it was done in jest, they still believe that it was inappropriate to put heels on a child who is just learning to walk.

'Poor little baby…' one woman wrote in the video's comments section. Another agreed and added, 'One way to break your baby's ankle if she were to go over on it.'

A third wrote, 'Even if play shoes, they are just horrid.'

'They can damage her feet; babies not supposed to be in heels,' said a fourth.

However, not all of the users have been so quick to accuse the woman; some have tried to defend her.

'Why is everyone so serious? It's a joke!' one person commented, adding that the child is likely not wearing heels every day.

Another user wrote, 'Calm down people, they're not real shoes!'

When a child is learning to walk, the soles of their feet making contact with the ground provide them with important sensory information, as the professionals at BetterHealth explain.

Because of this, toddlers learning to walk should spend as much time as possible with bare feet or shoes with a soft sole so they can feel the ground beneath them and build muscle.

The best shoes for toddlers should have:
  • a comfortable fit in length and width
  • plenty of room for the toes
  • a flexible, flat sole (check the sole can bend near the toe)
  • the front of the shoe wider than the heel, to match the natural shape of the foot
  • a solid heel counter (the part that goes around the back of the heel)
  • laces, straps or fasteners to prevent too much movement or slipping of the foot inside the shoe
If you are worried about your grandchild's feet or the way they walk, you should make an appointment with a general practitioner or a podiatrist.

What are your thoughts, folks? Do you think it's okay to put toddlers in heels, even as a joke? Let us know in the comments!
