Mum makes the rounds on social media after revealing a simple recipe to make Italian cannolis using an unlikely ingredient

A mum has shared how she transformed an unlikely ingredient into a decadent Italian dessert.

Can you guess what ingredient that is?

Melbourne mum-of-two Emilly took to Facebook to share her inventive hack for preparing the delicious cannoli — a tube-shaped, Italian pastry that is filled with a sweet, creamy filling that is usually made with ricotta and chocolate chips.

For her recipe, Emilly revealed that she used an unlikely Italian ingredient to make the delectable treats, sharing that the cannelloni pasta tubes — a pasta shell that is usually filled with savoury ingredients such as spinach, ricotta, or beef — could be a good alternative for the "shell" of the dessert.

To prepare the treat, Emilly said that the first step is to create toffee from scratch — any recipe will do — before mixing toasted hazelnuts into it.

Next, blitz the hardened praline until its consistency becomes "paste-like" — smooth and runny but not too wet nor too thick.

Then, prepare a chocolate custard by mixing flour, egg yolks, milk, cocoa powder, butter and melted marble chocolate in a bowl until all of the ingredients are well-combined.

Once the mixture is ready, add the hazelnut praline into the bowl and set it aside.

While the mixture is setting, fry the cannelloni shells in hot oil until they turn golden brown.

Finally, pipe the chocolate filling into each cannelloni shell and top it with a dusting of icing sugar before serving.
