Mum blamed for daughter’s early development after feeding her food that’s ‘full of hormones’

No one likes unsolicited advice, especially when it comes to parenting. An Australian mum was left 'livid' after her sister-in-law made an implication that the chicken she was feeding her daughter was responsible for the nine-year-old 'growing breasts' and going through puberty early.

Rachel, from Adelaide, told Kidspot that she was offended by the accusation, with her in-law Jess insisting that the amount of chicken she feeds the young girl is to blame as it's 'full of hormones'.

The mum was catching up with Jess while their kids were playing together when the uncomfortable comment was made. Puberty was brought up in the conversation as Rachel shared that her nine-year-old was currently going through it.

Rachel said that she initially felt at ease as she could easily open up about such a sensitive topic with Jess – until she said her daughter had started growing breasts.

'Do you eat a lot of chicken? They pump chickens full of hormones and that can cause breast growth in humans you know,' Jess mentioned.

But the Australian Chicken Meat Federation debunked this common misconception, explaining: ‘Australian chickens are not given hormones. Their size occurs naturally due to selective breeding and optimal nutrition.’

‘Independent tests by the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources, as part of the National Residue Survey, have consistently confirmed that Australian chicken meat is free of added hormones.’ it added.

It also clarified that hormones are not approved for use in poultry meat production in Australia, emphasising that it’s illegal to use them.

Unfortunately, Rachel revealed that this wasn't the first time her sister-in-law meddled in their family’s lifestyle. Previously, Jess also accused her of cooking unhealthy food for her family.

The mum said that the comment was ridiculous for multiple reasons. Firstly, Rachel argued that it 'implied puberty was a bad thing' and that her daughter is too young.

Rachel explained that chicken in Australia is hormone-free and has been for more than 40 years, so it doesn’t have a link to her daughter’s early development whatsoever.

Despite the incident, Rachel said she’s not planning to cut ties with her sister-in-law. However, she does have plans to cook a roast chicken the next time that Jess visits.

What are your thoughts about the comments that Jess made? Was she out of line or was it a valid concern? What would YOU have done if you were in Rachel’s shoes? Let us know in the comments!

Children mature at different ages. Sister-in-law sounds like a know it all and knows nothing. Just ignore her.

Well how does that explain my situation - I am 65 and started menstruating at 10 years of age, a year earlier than my older sister (5 years older - she started at 16) and we did not eat a lot of chicken and most of those that we ate were old boilers (old laying hens),
