As technology continues to evolve and innovate, more people are becoming surprised by the changes they see on more recent smartphones.
Case in point: foldable smartphones.
These phones may have seemed like futuristic technology you'd only see in sci-fi films, however, Motorola has just unveiled a foldable smartphone concept that will blow your mind!
Motorola, together with its parent company, Lenovo, has just launched their foldable phone, which can bend and twist into different shapes—and even match your outfit!
The new 'Adaptive Display Concept', announced at the Lenovo Tech World event, features a 6.9-inch full HD+ phone that can fold around your wrist like a chunky plastic bracelet from the past.
Reminiscent of early mobile phones that sparked a revolution in communication, Motorola's bendy gadget aims to change the game again.
But does it live up to the hype?
According to Motorola, this concept device will allow hands-free use and create 'more meaningful experiences' for users. It showcases advances in flexible display technology and AI capabilities.
The screen can morph into a slim 4.6-inch display by bending a part of the device—lengthwise—which can double as a stand for video calls when folded.
But the real innovation is in its generative AI that can match your on-screen wallpaper by studying your outfit.
The launch was led by Motorola’s Innovative Research Lead, Lexi Valasek, who took the stage to show off the new concept’s fashionable AI application.
A company spokesperson said that the new device 'moulds to our consumer needs'.
A tech reporter shared that the device appeared to be an improvement of the promise of making a foldable smart watch or phone, which the company made in 2016.
'This version does seem more advanced than the one we saw seven years ago,' wrote Nathan Edwards from The Verge.
'We only saw that one go into snap-bracelet mode (with a frankly upsetting crunching noise),' Edwards said.
'But the 2023 model can do a couple more poses, from the happy worm to a tented mode.'
Other industry watchers also shared that the device is a significant advancement from the old Motorola phones' foldable 'clamshell device'.
However, given that this concept is six years in the making, critics are sceptical of a finished product from Motorola.
They said that the 'smart' accessory was merely a way to promote their new AI features, such as the internal image and pattern-maker that is supposed to complement the user’s clothes.
'The modern smartphone experience is going through a transformative shift, with AI at the centre, serving as both a personal assistant and a tool to enhance everyday tasks, improve performance, and create more meaningful experiences for our users,' the smartphone manufacturer said.
'Motorola is taking its AI endeavours to another level, showcasing innovations that redefine the possibilities of flexible hardware and also introduced exciting new AI features.'
Other AI features include an enhanced document scanner and one that creates a privacy veil on a smartphone’s display.
