Mimeograph

Do you remember the mimeograph? Before photocopiers, this machine was the go-to for duplicating papers using stencils. Did you ever volunteer to help your teacher make copies of your worksheets? Many people say the smell of the ink was truly unforgettable.

For sure. I wrote the manual on Air Combat in a Cheetah Fighter aircraft at 89 Combat Fighter School in South Africa. After I had written it, by hand - no computers then, it had to go to the Typist pool and they had to type it out on the typewriters, onto the paper for the Mimeograph. This then had to be read for corrections - proof reading. If there was an error, the whole page had to be retyped, if the correction ink couldn't do the job. A long process, but once everything was correct, the manuals rolled off quite quickly.

That's quite a process! I can only imagine the frustration of typing a whole page only to discover one tiny mistake 🫣 It must be rewarding to see a finished product!

I typed exam papers on these. There was a “skin” on top of paper, you typed and if an error occurred, you placed a ruler between these two sheets, twisted the ruler upwards, then applied a bright flourescent pink corrector. This solidified, making another skin to re-type the correct letter or number. I loved exam time, even painted my nails pink as well with the corrector, took months to finally come off!
Then I would run required copies off, changing the paper colour to the Examining Boards rules. Then I would invigilate in the evenings for the students exams. Those days were the best, being a junior for 5 years because I had more fun.
