Member Story: National Australia Bank Visa Card Information Stolen

Today, I'm sharing something on behalf of member John B., who had a terrible experience with NAB after his visa card information was somehow stolen and used overseas.

'On the 10th of March 2023, I received a text message from the NAB with a message asking if I had purchased an item for $56 that they were questioning. I promptly sent a message that I had not. I arrived home 20 minutes later & opened my computer & logged into my card account. This is on the 10th of March. I found that $3111.28 had been deducted from my account in Amsterdam for travel. Also, $55.50 from Marrakech & another $65.55 from Marrakech. I promptly rang the NAB & cancelled my card & told them that I had not done these transactions & I had never been to these places.'

'Then, on the 13th of March, three days later, I checked my card account & they had taken the same amounts out of my account 3 days later. Plus a $93.34 International taxation fee. I rang them immediately as this had made my account overdrawn, of which I did not have an overdraft. This was 3 days after I had cancelled my card.'

'Since then, they have reimbursed me with the first transaction on the 10th of March but will not reimburse me for the 2nd lot that they deducted, which, as I said, was 3 days after I had cancelled my card. I have had numerous phone calls to them, but they refuse to reimburse me for these last 3 transactions. Since then, they have deleted the first transactions from my bank statements & left the transactions for the 13th & 14th on my statements. Stupid me should have printed a copy at the time.'

'Since then, of course, the NAB posted an $ 8 billion 6-month profit. And they say they are looking after their customers & their accounts but lining their own pockets at the expense of the little man. I am disappointed with NAB, but most other banks are taking the same course with their depositors.'

'We never had these problems when paying by cheque or cash, which makes us think twice about going cashless. We have had nothing but scams & problems since plastic cards were introduced.'

Members, do you have any words of wisdom or an experience to share that may help? We'd love to hear from you.

Good on this gentleman for having the fortitude to actually ring the bank - that in itself is a trial. Yes I would definitely change banks, but that in itself causes all the problems of having to change your bank account with Medicare, Centrelink, Paypal, etc etc. If he has got the $3K plus amount back, I would write the rest off and change banks, with a very emphatic letter to the Board telling them why they no longer had my business.

Maybe cancel the card and get a new one with a different number?

NAB...MORE THAN MONEY !!!! Have you seen those ads?
No bank is more than money. ALL banks are ALL ABOUT MONEY. This scenario proves it.
The more I see of this kind of thing the more I am astounded that some can still be caught out.
I would have been straight on the phone after receiving that message. Also, I most likely would have recorded the call to protect myself.
My only caution is, and always has been, don't do anything online. Don't react to odd messages. Always talk to your bank direct.
