My gran, (we always called her new granny as she lived in the city 3 hours from our home. She was my mom’s mom. Taught us how to make Melk Kos (milk food) I haven’t made it in a while.
It’s very basic, made from boiled hot milk mixed with flour and butter and salt sugar and cinnamon. We kids loved it, my kids loved it, but I’ve never made it for my grand babies. We used to make Melk tert which had egg in it, made from a rough (roo) can’t remember the spelling
and a fridge cake made with Marie biscuits and thick custard and frozen condensed milk mixed with lemon juice. Layered Marie biscuits custard, more Marie biscuits and the condensed milk then topped with fresh cream and cherries and or crumbled flakes of chocolate. I grew up on a ranch, in Zimbabwe in the North Western area called Matabeleland. Right next to the Hwange game reserve. We had our own milk herd of cows. So we made our own butter, cream and buttermilk.
