McDonald’s Australia shakes things up—discover the changes!

McDonald's has been a reliable pit stop for a quick breakfast fix for many of us.

Whether it's the classic Egg McMuffin or those fluffy hotcakes, there's something comforting about the predictability of a Macca's breakfast.

However, recent developments may require you to set your alarms earlier, as McDonald’s is changing its Australian operations, which could affect your breakfast routine.

Due to the impact of avian flu outbreaks, drastically reducing the nation's chicken egg supply, McDonald's franchises across Australia will now cease serving their breakfast menu at 10:30 am instead of the usual midday cutoff.

This decision addressed the egg shortage that has hit the hospitality industry and supermarkets hard.

The avian flu has forced the closure and culling of stock at two farms in New South Wales and eight in Victoria.

This has led to a scramble to manage the supply of eggs, a staple in many McDonald's breakfast offerings.

The McMuffins and hotcakes, which rely on the availability of fresh eggs, are particularly affected.

‘We know our customers love a Macca's breakfast, so to make sure we can continue to serve up fresh Aussie eggs on our menu, we'll be temporarily offering breakfast until 10:30 am across Australia,’ McDonald’s spokesman said.

‘This means customers can continue to enjoy all their brekkie favourites such as the Bacon & Egg McMuffin, Sausage & Egg McMuffin, and Big Brekkie Burger – they'll just need to get in a little earlier than usual.’

‘We're continuing to work closely with our network of Aussie farmers, producers, and suppliers as the industry comes together to manage this challenge.’

It's not just McDonald's feeling the pinch. Supermarket giants Woolworths and Coles have also implemented purchase limits on eggs.

‘Along with other retailers, we're expecting a short-term delay in stock from one of our egg suppliers in NSW, ACT and Victoria due to the temporary closure of one of their packing sheds,’ Woolworths spokesman said.

‘Their supply is expected to recover over the next week as they ramp up operations at their other sites.’

Woolworths enforced a two-pack per person limit in NSW, ACT, and Victoria.

Although Western Australia remains unaffected, Coles has followed suit with a similar rationing strategy.

‘Right now, the majority of customers are only buying one carton of eggs at a time, and there's no reason that should change,’ the spokesperson stated.

‘We encourage shoppers to be mindful of others and continue to only buy what they normally would.’

In Victoria, over one million birds are slated for destruction due to an outbreak, while New South Wales has reported over 320,000 affected birds.

According to the NSW Health website, bird flu is caused by influenza A viruses, similar to those causing seasonal influenza in humans.

‘It spreads mainly among wild water birds but can occasionally spread to humans, although this is rare.’ the website read.

Avian flu can result in mild to severe illness in birds and other animals.

Most human infections are mild and asymptomatic; symptoms may include fever, cough, fatigue, muscle aches, and a sore throat.

While the flu mainly affects wild water birds and rarely spreads to humans, the impact on the poultry industry has been severe.

In related news, a child in Victoria contracted Australia's first bird flu, specifically an H5N1 infection acquired in India.

Health officials stressed that human transmission of avian influenza is uncommon, and there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission for H5N1 strains. Read more about this story here.
