Matt Shirvington’s faces wildest adventure on-air: ‘I loved it’

When it comes to pushing boundaries and taking on new challenges, some people just can’t resist the thrill. One well-known personality recently took on an adventure that left everyone talking.

Here’s a look at what happened and why it was such a memorable experience.

Accompanied by viewer Stefan Schwob, Sunrise host Matt ‘Shirvo’ Shirvington donned a wetsuit at SeaLife Sydney and came face-to-face with the ocean’s top predators.

Shirvington took on a daring new adventure last 3 December. He swam alongside sharks and confronted his fears head-on.

‘It was really good. The most remarkable thing is that you get all the training and you get an understanding of being close to these beasts. “You think, man, it’s so scary,”’ he said.

Even as the sharks glided past, Shirvo couldn't help but crack a smile.

‘That vision of them coming straight at you with their teeth and almost with a slight, sinister smile on their face was the most scary thing.’

As part of the experience, Shirvington noted how visitors can walk through the aquarium’s tunnels and wave at the sharks, but he admitted the urge to reach out to them wasn’t without its risks.

‘But I pointed to a couple of the sharks a few times. The instructor would pull your hand down, “Don’t put your hand out.” Sometimes, you know, over the years, they have hand-fed them,’ he shared.

Initially, Shirvo and Stefan were both a bit apprehensive, but their nerves faded once they were submerged in the water.

‘Once you were down there and you got a better understanding for the diving and all that stuff and they talk you through it, it was actually really serene and beautiful,’ he added

‘I loved it. Loved it,’ he said with a big smile on his face.

While all experiences tend to be memorable, some can be an unforgettable spectacle for reasons we didn’t anticipate.

In a previous story, another Sunrise host experienced an on-air mishap during a cruise ship segment by accidentally dropping something in the ocean.

That was a "DIVE"? Looked like he was inside a glass-walled tunnel to me. The commentary left out the word "hero".

My Granddaughter did that for her 21st birthday at Aqua in Perth.

So, is it a tunnel filled with water where you put a wetsuit on to have a look at the wildlife under the sea?
I went diving with crocs in Darwin. You need to do it to understand 'diving'. I was in a cage. The massive croc came to visit me.

I forgot to say that diving with sharks, you are together in the same tank. My son and grandson did this in Melb years ago. Matt S was reminded not to point at the sharks because they have been handfed in the past. Take a deep breath and go experience it for yourself.
