Margot Robbie shares a boozy tidbit about her steamy The Wolf of Wall Street scene

Every famous actor had that one breakout role in their career that really catapulted them to the next level — and for Aussie actress Margot Robbie, some would say that was her part in The Wolf of Wall Street.

The film, directed by Martin Scorsese and released in 2013, told the true story of Jordan Belfort (played by Leonardo DiCaprio).

Belfort was a US stockbroker who was convicted of fraud and related crimes in connection with the manipulation of penny stocks.

Robbie played the character Naomi Lapaglia, Belfort's second wife, and it was during filming of the movie that she stripped down for her now-infamous X-rated scene.

In the scene, Robbie and DiCaprio’s characters had sex… on a bed stacked with cash.

Recalling the experience during a recent appearance at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts event this week, Robbie said she needed some liquid courage to get through it.

Apparently, she took tequila shots with DiCaprio before they had to start filming!

'I’m not going to lie,' she said. 'I had a couple shots of tequila before that scene because I was nervous … very, very nervous.'

We don't blame her! It can't be easy, especially when you're just 22 years old (which is how old Robbie was at the time).

She continued: 'Honestly I know it sounds silly now knowing how big (the movie) became but at the time I thought "No one is going notice me in this film."'

‘It kind of doesn’t matter what I do… because everyone is going to be focused on Leo and everything.’

Previously, Robbie had shared other details involving the scene.

In 2018, she shared a rather uncomfortable fact: 30 men — and only men — were in the room with her while it was being shot.

‘For 17 hours I’m pretending to be touching myself.’ she said.

‘It’s just a very weird thing and you have to bury the embarrassment and absurdity really deep and fully commit.’

And in 2017, she also told reporters that the same scene actually had the crew shocked when she was done taping.

‘I got a million paper cuts on my back from all that money!’ she said.

‘It’s not as glamorous as it sounds. If anybody is ever planning on having sex on top of a pile of cash, don’t.’

Er…we’ll take note of that, Margot.

The Wolf of Wall Street went on to earn an estimated $575 million from screenings worldwide.

Key Takeaways

  • Margot Robbie has revealed she needed some liquid courage to film an infamous X-rated scene on The Wolf of Wall Street.
  • The Australian actress recalled taking tequila shots with actor Leonardo DiCaprio ahead of their scene together, in what would go on to be her breakthrough role in the industry.
  • Robbie, 32, who made an appearance at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts event this week, looked back on acting as the character Naomi Lapaglia when she was 22 years old.
  • Robbie later revealed that after the film had come out she nearly packed her bags and headed home to Australia, thinking about quitting acting.
Despite the massive success and instant career boost she got, Robbie said she nearly quit acting after the film was released.

‘Something was happening in those early stages and it was all pretty awful,’ she said.

‘I remember saying to my mum, “I don’t think I want to do this”.’

‘And she just looked at me, completely straight-faced, and was like, “Darling, I think it’s too late not to.” That’s when I realised the only way was forward.’

She also said a big part of her second-guessing was because of a known fixture in the lives of celebrities: paparazzi.

‘I know how to go through airports, and now I know who’s trying to f*** me over in what ways,’ she said.

‘If my mum dies in a car accident because you wanted a photo of me going in the grocery shop, or you knock my nephew off a bike — for what? For a photo? It’s dangerous but still, weirdly nothing feels like it changes.’

Robbie is set to appear in the upcoming film The Barbie Movie.

Other known roles she played include Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad and American figure skater Tonya Harding in I, Tonya.

So, what do you think of her admission? Are you a fan of her work especially during her early days on Aussie shows like Neighbours?

Have a heart, some of the scenes actors are required to do in the name of art/cinema/profit are just short of porn. And 30 men in the room - how did they justify that? Also, I'd hate the lack of privacy re paparazzi.

I would hate that sort of attention. I've seen a very small part of it, you can't just nip to the shops in your trackies and slippers, you have to be immaculate every time you step outside just in case. Something that should take about 5 minutes you have to allow an hour, if people recognise you, you have to stop for selfies, autographs and a chat, that is if you want to stay in peoples good books. You have to always be in a good mood, with a ready smile, no matter what is going on in your personal life. It's a way of life I couldn't handle. ;)
