Man sneaks into wildlife park and makes off with one animal in daring theft

In a strange and troubling incident, a man allegedly broke into a wildlife park, raising serious concerns among staff and advocates.

Authorities are investigating the incident, which has sparked debate about security and animal safety.

The unexpected event has left many questioning how such breaches can be prevented.

The incident unfolded on a quiet Wednesday night and was captured on the park's CCTV footage.

It showed a man, his identity obscured by a towel and cap, brazenly snatching a 65cm saltwater crocodile from its enclosure.

The footage then took an even stranger turn as the man appeared to engage in a selfie session with the distressed reptile before it managed to break free and make a dash for safety, disappearing.

The aftermath compounded the audacity of the act. A staff member who noticed the empty enclosure discovered the crocodile's absence the following day.

Emily Moynes, the manager of Crocodylus Park, described the ordeal as 'very stressful' for both the park staff and the juvenile crocodile, which remains missing.

'You can see this individual catch this crocodile and then they proceed to, it looks like, film themselves in a bit of a selfie video,' she said.

'You could clearly see that this animal is trying to get away from this person and just try to seek some sort of safety, shelter.'

While shaken, the park's staff remains hopeful. Ms Moynes expressed confidence in the crocodile's resilience, believing it to be somewhere on the property still.

The search is on, with zookeepers combing the area, determined to bring the young reptile back to safety.

But the tale takes an even darker turn. It is believed that the same man commandeered a ute from the zoo after releasing the crocodile.

In his hasty escape, he reportedly ran over a raft of ducks, adding animal cruelty to the list of offences.

The Northern Territory Police have confirmed that they are investigating the incident, and one can only hope that the perpetrator is swiftly brought to justice for the sake of the animals involved and the park's integrity.
