Making your own kite

Remember making your own kite? All you needed was some brown paper, wood, glue, a ball of string, and a little creativity, and voila, you have a kite! It was such a rewarding experience to create something from scratch and then watch it take flight. On windy days, kids would take their kites to the beach or the park and fly them as high as possible. They often got tangled in trees or flew into someone’s garden. But you could just dash home and make a new one! Ah, kids back then were never bored; we made our own fun and enjoyed the simple things in life. Do you also have fond memories of making kites?

I remember making kites and flying them when we lived in the hills in Wales. That was back in the late 40s. We played hopscotch in the road and I had a marble tor. We also had tops which we wound string or rope ,can’t remember, around then pulled the rope away and they spun for ages. Then you whipped them to keep them going. Never bored.

We made kites like these, brown paper, sticky tape, wood and string. We drew pictures on them. It was such fun trying to make them fly and the excitement when they flew was wonderful. We also played hopscotch, marbles, fiddlesticks, knuckles, with real sheep knuckle bones. Ring a ring a rosy, drop the hankie, skipping games with a huge rope that multiple people could skip with at the same time. Heads off, now that was fun. So many games that kids these days have never heard of. Most of them were played outside in the fresh air as well. We played cards, board games like ludo, snakes and ladders, monopoly. Simple games that provided so much fun and used so much imagination and concentration for some of them. Such good memories. I have also played these games with my children and grandchildren, they usually get bored after a short time and go back to their technology. But at least they have tried them.

My late husband( at the time, he was only my boyfriend ) and myself had a passion for Box Kites….many were made, many got tangled in trees, many bit the dust, and some we even took home and improved upon….lots of beautiful memories were made
