Looking for healthier skin? Sydney dietician and nutritionist says these are the things you should pick up at the supermarket

Most of us know we should moisturise and apply sunscreen if we want healthy skin.

But did you know that what you eat also has a huge impact on your complexion?

Rebecca Gawthorne, a dietician and nutritionist based in Sydney, took her 155K followers on Instagram on a grocery run through a ‘reel’, which is what they call short-form videos shared on the app.

Rebecca notes on her Instagram post: ‘What you eat can affect the health of your skin. While there is no one food that will cure all your skin problems, and there are many other factors that affect our skin health, modifying your diet to regularly include the foods in my reel may help with nourishing your skin and assist with reducing acne, inflammation, dry flakey skin, and even help with skin elasticity and firmness.’

She begins the reel with food rich in healthy fats. Items rich in Omega-6 and Omega-3 help key dry skin at bay because the fatty acids are integral in building healthy cell membranes.

Omega-3 is also said to keep the skin soft.

If you like avocados, you’re off to a great start! Rebecca recommends adding salmon, olive oil, and nuts to your shopping list.

The nutritionist then moves on to grocery items rated low in the glycaemic index (GI).

People with diabetes are likely already well versed with the concept, but for the uninformed, low GI foods are those that have a minimal effect on your blood sugar levels, and include most leafy vegetables and some fruits.

Rebecca picked multigrain bread, chickpeas, and red lentils for the reel. Chickpeas might be hard to come by these days, though, owing to the global shortage.

While Rebecca recommends a low-glycemic diet to prevent acne, which is uncommon among older adults, you can still follow the suggestion to keep your glucose levels in check.

Consistent high blood sugar can lead to an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. It can also affect kidney function and eyesight.

If you’ve suffered from sun damage, you can help your skin by eating fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C. Oranges, turmeric, raspberries, and broccoli are all great for reducing inflammation and stimulating collagen production.

Rebecca also suggests adding black beans, garlic, and almonds to your meal planning. That’s because these are high in zinc, which is great for oily skin and the treatment of skin lesions.

Zinc also helps strengthen your immune system for improved resistance against infections.

Lastly, those who want glowing skin should get items with prebiotics and probiotics, such as yoghurt and asparagus. According to Healthline, these promote a balanced microbiome that can ‘reduce eczema, acne, dry skin, and even wrinkles and skin cancer risk linked to UV damage.’

So there you have it! Everyone can benefit from healthy eating — and radiant skin is just one benefit!
