Local Greek cafe shuts down after six decades of service

For many Melburnians, the aroma of freshly baked pastries and the sight of delectable cakes from International Cakes was a staple of city life.

This iconic Greek cafe, which became a cornerstone of the local Greek community in the 1960s, served its final customer on Monday night.

This closure marked the end of an era for the city's culinary landscape.

International Cakes was more than just an eatery; it once represented the fading heartbeat of Melbourne's once-thriving Greek Quarter.

Over the years, many Greek-owned businesses relocated, which left International Cakes as one of the last vestiges of the vibrant cultural hub.

Owner Bill Batzogiannis announced the closure in an emotional note that resonated with many loyal patrons.

'We have cherished the relationships we have built with each and every one of our loyal customers and are sincerely grateful for your continued support throughout the years,' the note read.

'Your trust and loyalty in our brand have been a driving force behind our successes, and we deeply appreciate them. It has been an honour to serve you and be a part of your lives.'

The cafe's legacy has been riddled with tarts, cakes, baklava, and friendly customer service, which made shoppers feel like family.

Generations of Australians, particularly Melburnians, grew up with the sweet treats from International Cakes.

It was a difficult decision to close the shop.

Mr Batzogiannis, who immigrated to Australia in the 1960s, considered retirement five years ago but chose to persevere for the sake of the community, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Melbourne, after six lockdowns, suffered greatly, and International Cakes became a beacon of resilience and comfort for many locals.

'I'm okay; I wanted to stop working. It's time for retirement,' Mr Batzogiannis shared as he reflected on his decision.

His dedication to his customers was evident until the very end, as he recounted how patrons flocked to the cafe to purchase their favourite cakes upon hearing the news of its closure.

'They have grown up here, the many thousands of customers who have ordered cakes,' he stated.

'I've had the sweetest customers.'

Social media tributes about International Cakes became a testament to the impact it had on the community.

Customers shared their heartfelt stories and gratitude to the shop.

'All the very best, Bill, you have always been a gentleman and friend; enjoy your retirement,' one customer wrote.

Others reminisced about family visits, birthday celebrations, and the cafe as a haven of Greek culture in the heart of the city.

As we bid farewell to International Cakes, this reminds us of the importance of local businesses in shaping the soul of our neighbourhoods.

They are more than just places to eat; they are gathering spots, memory makers, and integral parts of our personal histories.
