Local dance

Who remembers joining the local dance? It was all giggles and teasing, with all the girls lined up, hoping for a dance invite. The slow and romantic last dance was the highlight, providing the perfect excuse for a little innocent bum-touching—with the young lady's consent, of course. Ah, these local dances are unforgettable, with some even finding their lifelong partners from these dances. Do you remember the excitement of those dances? Share your stories here.

Before I met my husband a girl friend and I used to go to a lot of country dances. It was always a great night. Some of the young men used to like to touch up every girl they danced with, whether or not they asked. Some of the young ladies encouraged this behaviour. All it took was a please don’t if you didn’t like it and they stopped, they didn’t persist as there were plenty who allowed it. After I met my husband, on a blind date set up by my friend, we used to attend the dances. It was so good being in his arms and dancing the night away. It formed a large part of our courtship as there were not too many other night time activities around other than movies/drive ins or pubs/clubs, in the country area we lived in. Another activity that was common at these country dances was a quickie in the back seat of a car, many a baby was conceived this way. Many a couple were sprung in the act by friends, and sometimes by an irate dad or mum who went looking for their mostly daughters who had disappeared from inside the hall. This was not something I was ever interested in.

I remember my aunt who is 9 years older than me, used to go to a dance at Hurstville Civic centre every Saturday night. I uses to think I can't wait until I'm old enough to go as well.

When I hit 14 I used to dance away both Friday and Saturday nights but at Disco's. Persian Room and Crystal palace Kingscross and Chequers night club in the city.
I remember 2am we would visit the infamous sweethearts Cafe, I would have chips and milk shake and everyone else spare ribs . McDonald's is now where this Cafe once was. Cold chisel actually wrote a song with this Cafe in.

Oh my goodness! What a cute transition from going to country dances to dancing the night away with your husband! It's like a love story bound to happen! Thanks for sharing this lovely story @Gsr! 🥳
