The airwaves of Sydney's 104.1 2DayFM will soon sound markedly different as the station has announced the conclusion of the Hughesy, Ed and Erin breakfast show, a staple for many Sydneysiders during their morning routines.
The show, which has been a source of laughter, news, and heartfelt moments since its inception in 2020, will leave a significant void in the lineup.
David 'Hughesy' Hughes, Ed Kavalee, and Erin Molan, the trio that has become a familiar presence in the lives of their listeners, have cited the challenge of managing family commitments across different cities as the reason for their departure.
‘We’ve loved our time together on 2DayFM Breakfast. However, due to some of our families living in different cities, we are unable to commit to 2025,’ the hosts announced.
‘So with a heavy heart, we are moving aside so 2DayFM can find the team to take them forward in Breakfast,’
‘We are so grateful to Sydney for their support, and to double the number of listeners in three years is something we are immensely proud of, and we will miss each and every one of them.’
The show's end is particularly poignant as it follows Hughesy's revelation about his mother Carmel's health struggles, which he shared with listeners in an emotional segment.
‘It’s been a tough couple of weeks,’ he said shortly before her passing.
‘She’s still with us, but it won’t be long. She’s a beautiful woman who’s been a great matriarch of the family, and we’re all around her at the moment.’
The hosts' authenticity and openness have been a hallmark of the show, endearing them to their audience and making this announcement bittersweet.
For the remainder of 2024, the station has arranged for Jimmy Smith and Nath Roye from The Jimmy and Nath Show to fill the breakfast slot.
This temporary measure will pave the way for a new lineup in 2025, with Southern Cross Austereo's chief content officer, Dave Cameron, hinting at upcoming changes and further announcements.
‘As we look to 2025, we are preparing for a change for the 2DayFM Sydney Breakfast show and will make further announcements in due course,’ he stated.
The Hughesy, Ed, and Erin show has been more than just a morning radio program; it has been a platform for sharing, connecting, and entertaining.
From lighter moments like Erin's confession of ordering Uber Eats six times daily to the more serious discussions of personal struggles, the show has captured many human experiences.
‘I’m not a big people person. I’m a bit of a loner by nature,’ Erin shared.
‘Yeah, but you’re not Meghan Markle. You’re not getting papped at the front gate,’ Hughesy responded.
