Limited budget? No problem! Here’s how to transform an old table into a designer piece with a budget Kmart buy

We love a good home makeover here at the SDC, especially when it's achieved on a shoestring budget using clever hacks and DIY skills. Whether it's a piece of furniture, your wardrobe, or even your home décor, there’s just something therapeutic about breathing new life into old things.

Just take this recent transformation project by one savvy Aussie woman, for example. With a little creativity and imagination, she turned an average-looking piece of furniture into something chic and unique... All without spending a fortune!

The thrifty DIY-er managed to transform an old table – which she bought from a Facebook Marketplace group – into a chic, modern-looking table. She used $30 Kmart decking tiles and coloured grout to complete the transformation.

After deciding to refurbish the coffee table to cover up some old marks, the Aussie woman said she just followed a video and improvised the rest of the project.

‘I bought this table on Marketplace,’ she said. ‘It had some marks on the top and I used the Kmart decking tiles to create my new coffee table. So happy with how it turned out. Thank you Kmart.’

If you’re feeling inspired and you want to try this out for yourself, here are the steps the woman followed to finish the coffee table transformation:

First, the woman taped around the side of the table to keep it clean and tidy.

Then, using the Selleys Hold Up glue, she glued the tiles to the table. When the glue had dried, she used Dunlop flexible coloured grout to cover the table.

Afterwards, she used her hands to smooth out the grout as much as possible. It is also recommended that you wear gloves to keep the grout out of your hands (not only will this prevent it from irritating your skin, but it also makes clean-up later a lot easier).

Then, she used the Betta TileCare aerosol tile and grout sealer to seal the top of the table. The savvy DIY-er admitted that because she only used a video for reference, she underestimated how much grout she would need.

As a result, she ended up buying two more bags.

She shared: ‘The grouting was definitely more work than I had anticipated, but it turned out okay.’

It seems that DIY projects are starting to gain attention, as another woman also redecorated her home with some help from Kmart. You can find more on that story here.

If you’d like to try this DIY coffee table project yourself, you’ll need the following:
