Learn the reason why this man opened an emergency door mid-flight!

We understand that air travel can sometimes be a stressful experience – especially when dealing with the usual long lines, security checks and crowded flights.

But what one man did during a recent domestic flight in South Korea takes the cake for being the most shocking air travel incident most of us have heard in a while.

According to reports, a 33-year-old passenger aboard an Asiana Airlines Airbus A321 opened an emergency exit door as the plane was approaching landing.

The flight was en route from the picturesque southern island of Jeju to the bustling city of Daegu.

The man's actions caused air to blast into the cabin, resulting in 12 passengers experiencing minor injuries such as breathing difficulties.

Fortunately, the plane still managed to land safely, and those injured were promptly taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

But what on Earth possessed the man to do such a thing? His explanation is certainly unexpected.

He told police that he felt suffocated and wanted to get off the plane as quickly as possible, according to the South Korean news agency Yonhap, which cited police sources.

It's also worth noting that the man had recently lost his job, which might have added to his already high levels of stress.

The plane was carrying a total of 194 passengers, including teenage athletes heading to a track and field competition.

His sudden decision to open the emergency exit door at an altitude of 700 feet (213m) as the plane was nearing Daegu airport obviously created panic among passengers and crew alike.

Now, as a result of his actions, the man has been detained by Daegu police for allegedly violating the aviation security law.

If convicted, he could face up to a whopping 10 years in prison – a severe punishment for his impulsive and dangerous act.

Daegu police have requested a warrant to formally arrest the man, but when reached by The Associated Press, they did not answer calls or provide any further details about the individual, citing privacy concerns.

Although cases like this are thankfully rare, it serves as a stark reminder that the stresses of modern life can sometimes drive people to extreme actions.

While opening an emergency door mid-flight should never be considered an acceptable solution to dealing with discomfort or anxiety, this event could perhaps encourage airlines to examine their protocols and consider offering support measures for anxious passengers to prevent such incidents from occurring again.

In light of this unusual and dangerous event, we at the Seniors Discount Club remind all our members to take care of their physical and mental well-being, especially during air travel.

Make sure to be prepared with the necessary comforts and distractions to help keep nerves at bay during your journeys.

And, of course, if you ever find yourself feeling overwhelmingly anxious or suffocated during a flight, call upon the flight attendants for help – they're there to ensure your safety and well-being.

Happy and safe travels to all our members!

Some decades back, I was a fairly recently qualified RAAF-trained commercial pilot, asked by a friend, the manager of a well-recognized flying company, to do a short return flight to an airport about half an hour away, with 2 passengers, in a fast and powerful twin-engined aeroplane. About half way through the outbound flight, the passenger sitting behind me unlatched the side window next to him (behind me, and to my left). This caused a noise like a shotgun going off, a sudden drop in cabin pressure and temperature, not to mention my sudden surprise, to say the least.
Being a cool person in those days, and realizing what had happened, I turned and looked over my shoulder at him, and said (probably through gritted teeth), "Close it!), which he was able to do once the plane was slowed, as the external suction at speed is quite severe. The trip continued uneventfully, and we returned safely. The passenger was somewhat embarrassed.
