The Anko Glass Flip Pickle Jar has been recalled due to safety concerns.
Kmart's said pickling jar became a hit item for its clever design, as it could separate vegetables easily from their pickling brine.
However, Kmart recalled these jars after receiving reports that the jars could potentially explode and pose a serious risk of injury to users.
The issue at hand is that the pickling jar could break when storing certain fruits or vegetables for fermentation.
This process could cause a build-up of gas within the jar and could lead to an explosion or difficulty in removing the lid.
This defect compromises the product's integrity and endangers people's safety when opening the jar.
The recall affected all jars sold between 15 February 2023 and 3 March 2025.
It's a stark reminder that even innovative products could have unforeseen flaws and lead to dangerous outcomes.
Kmart confirmed that injuries related to the jar had already occurred.
Customers who own the product are at risk of serious injury from lacerations if the jar explodes or if the lid breaks.
Kmart strongly advised customers to 'immediately stop use' and return the product to any Kmart store for a full refund, with or without a receipt.
As of writing, the Anko Glass Flip Pickle Jar has been pulled out from Kmart’s online store.
This recall came after two Kmart customers shared their harrowing experiences with the exploding jars.
Last year, one woman recounted a terrifying incident where the jar exploded, which sent glass shards flying across her kitchen.
'I heard a loud bang and glass flying everywhere; I thought my kitchen light had exploded,' she said.
'Lucky I had bent my head towards the crisper as the glass could have got in my eyes; there were tiny bits of glass plus large pieces.'
In a similar vein, shopper Sally Asplin also shared her experience with the jar, as it exploded in her fridge while storing beetroot.
She shared the aftermath of the explosion online and the extent of its damage.
