Kmart lights up Met Gala: From stars to stylers, get these looks for less!

The Met Gala, often referred to as 'fashion's biggest night out', is a beacon of haute couture and avant-garde ensembles. Celebrities and fashion icons parade in outfits crafted by the world's most renowned designers.

However, for those of us who marvel at the glitz and glamour from afar, the extravagant styles can seem as distant as the stars.

Enter Kmart, the beloved Australian department store, with a cheeky solution that's capturing the hearts of fashion enthusiasts and bargain hunters alike.

In a delightful twist, Kmart took to social media to showcase how everyday Australians can recreate some of the most talked-about Met Gala looks without breaking the bank.

The 2024 Met Gala's theme, ‘The Garden of Time’, inspired by J.G. Ballard’s short story, set the stage for a night of timeless fashion statements.

The theme commemorated the Costume Institute's newest exhibition, ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion’, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan.

Kmart, known for its affordable fashion and homewares, rose to the occasion with its tongue-in-cheek recreations, proving that you don't need a celebrity budget to look like a million dollars.

The Australian stars shone brightly at this year's Met Gala, with Kylie Minogue, Nicole Kidman, Troye Sivan, and co-chair Chris Hemsworth gracing the red carpet; however, it was Kmart's playful take on these high-fashion looks that added an extra sparkle to the event's coverage.

Kmart's social media post, inviting fans to ‘Recreate these Met Gala looks with Kmart’, quickly made the rounds, showcasing the brand's knack for humour and relatability.

The first look featured was that of singer Troye Sivan, who stunned in a Prada ensemble.

Kmart's ‘get the look option’ included the Workwear Long Sleeve Business Shirt ($15), Business Pants ($18), and the Sleeveless Rib Curved Tank ($10)—all for $43.

Doja Cat, who sported one of the most eye-catching outfits at the event, attended the Gala with Guram Gvasalia.

The artist donned a damp, white T-shirt dress with mascara running down her face.

Kmart suggested pairing its Thick Ribbed Australian Cotton Bath Towel ($12) and OXX Cosmetics Extreme Volume Mascara ($8) with a 20L Solar Camp Shower ($10) to mimic the artist's dramatic appearance, all for just $30.

Naomi Watts, who made her acting debut in the 1986 Australian film For Love Alone, looked elegant in a strapless black gown adorned with sparkling embellishments and paired it with a small train, a dramatic shawl draped over her arms, and silver formal gloves.

Kmart proposed the Soft Touch Blanket ($19), Sleeveless Luxe Maxi Dress ($8), and OXX Bodycare Exfoliating Gloves ($2) to achieve a similar vibe for only $29.

And who could forget Michelle Yeoh's striking alfoil-look dress?

Yeoh donned a strapless ballgown that resembled tinfoil, prompting Kmart to swiftly suggest the 3 Way Sunshade ($6.50), Silver Mesh Table Runner ($6), and the Silver Look Backdrop ($9) to achieve the out-of-this-world style, costing shoppers $21.50.

Kmart's creative team recommended a three-way sunshade, a silver mesh table runner, and a silver backdrop to recreate the futuristic look for a budget-friendly $21.50.

The response on social media was immediate and overwhelmingly positive.

Fans praised Kmart for its ingenuity and humour, with one of the comments saying, ‘Kmart understands the assignment’

Another joked, ‘I know where to shop when I go to the Met Gala one day. '

‘I buy something from Kmart just for this video,’ a third chimed.

‘Kmart is so real for this,’ another added.

Rennie Freer, Kmart’s General Manager of Marketing, encapsulated the spirit behind the campaign, stating, ‘As one of the most coveted dates on the international fashion calendar, it was only right to celebrate the most iconic looks from the Met Gala by inspiring our customers to recreate each look with Kmart.’
