Kate Middleton looks angelic in her newly-released birthday portraits, takes to Twitter to thank her fans for their birthday wishes

Kate Middleton celebrated her 40th birthday on Sunday, January 9. In honour of the milestone occasion, she released three birthday portraits that included subtle nods to two of the most iconic royal women in history: Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana.

The Duchess of Cambridge has uploaded the photos on her official social media channels, along with a caption thanking her supporters who wished her a happy birthday. She also thanked Paolo Roversi and the National Portrait Gallery, of which the duchess is a patron.

“Thank you for all of your very kind birthday wishes, and to Paolo and the National Portrait Gallery for these three special portraits,” wrote the duchess, signing off the caption with her initial ‘C’, which stands for Catherine.

It is not usual for her or her husband, Prince William, to personally sign off social media posts with their initials, so this must have been an extraordinary occasion for the royal celebrant.

In the first sepia-coloured image, Kate can be seen in a traditional pose, donning a light, sheer dress tied with a ribbon on the sleeves. She is wearing a pair of diamond pearl drop earrings and a sapphire vintage ring, both belonging to the late Princess Diana.

Kate’s second photo is in colour and full of life, which shows the duchess looking regal in a glamorous red satin one-shoulder gown from Alexander McQueen. She completes the look by wearing earrings from the Queen’s private collection.

The third photo strikes the perfect balance between the first two. In the same sepia tone as the first one, here, Kate smiles warmly towards the camera. She is seen wearing the same pair of diamond pearl drop earrings but a different white gown, this time, with a ruffled off-shoulder.

According to a royal source, the three photos allow the public to see three aspects of Kate’s personality.

“There is the regal side to her – as you can see in the classic shot where she is looking off into the distance; there is the more informal image in the red dress as a modern woman at 40; and then there is the close-up, which offers a more intimate perspective.”

Paolo Revorsi, the renowned fashion photographer who took the photos, said that taking Kate’s photos was a ‘moment of pure joy’.

“I was moved by her warmth and friendly welcome and enchanted by her shining eyes that reflected the loveliness of her soul and her smile showing the generosity of her heart,” he added.

“It was a profound and rich experience for me, an unforgettable moment. I have met a wonderful person, a person who, with her positive energy, can bring hope to the whole world.”

It is said that following the Queen’s recent health issues and cancelled engagements, Kate has been taking on more royal duties and preparing for her role of future queen consort.

A royal insider says that recently, Kate “has really come into her own” and is “flourishing”.
