James Bond movie series mainstay passes away at 89

It's a sad day for movie lovers and James Bond fans worldwide as Hollywood lost one of its most versatile and memorable actors.

Joe Don Baker, the star who made his mark in not one, not two, but three James Bond films, has passed away.

Joe Don Baker's family confirmed his passing on 7 May and left behind a legacy that spanned several decades and genres.

While many may remember him for his unforgettable roles alongside Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan, his career went beyond shaken martinis and secret agents.

Born on 12 February 1936 in Groesbeck, Texas, Joe Don Baker's journey to stardom was as dramatic as any film.

He played football and basketball in high school, which earned him a scholarship to North Texas State College (now the University of North Texas).

He graduated in 1958 with a degree in business.

After serving two years in the United States Army, Baker set his sights on acting and studied at the prestigious Actor's Studio in New York.

His early days were spent treading the boards in Broadway productions like Marathon '33 and Blues For Mister Charlie.

After Broadway, he pursued a career in film and television in Los Angeles.

Baker held a rare distinction in the world of 007.

He was one of the only three actors to have played both a Bond villain and an ally.

In 1987's The Living Daylights, Baker went toe-to-toe with Timothy Dalton's Bond as the ruthless arms dealer Brad Whitaker.

In the late 1990s, Baker returned to the franchise.

He played the affable secret agent Jack Wade and helped Pierce Brosnan's Bond in both GoldenEye (1995) and Tomorrow Never Dies (1997).

For Bond fans, Baker's performances were some of the franchise's highlights.

His villainous take on Whitaker was menacing and memorable.

Meanwhile, his performance as Jack Wade brought a dose of charm and comic relief to Brosnan's outings.

While his Bond roles made him a household name, Baker's filmography was packed with memorable performances.

He starred as the tough-as-nails sheriff Buford Pusser in the 1973 classic Walking Tall.

He also appeared in Cool Hand Luke, Charlie Varrick, The Natural (alongside Robert Duvall and Barbara Hershey), and the 2008 comedy Strange Wilderness.

Baker was also a familiar face on television.

He appeared in the hit TV series Gunsmoke, Mission: Impossible, The Streets of San Francisco, and the British mini-series Edge of Darkness.

His performance in Edge of Darkness later on earned him a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor.

Baker's family described him as a 'beacon of kindness and generosity' with a deep love for reading, nature, and animals—especially cats.

Though he never had children, he was cherished by his extended family in Texas and a close circle of friends.

A funeral service to celebrate Joe Don Baker's extraordinary life will be held on Tuesday, 20 May, at Utter McKinley Mortuary in Mission Hills, California.
