'I must admit, it scared the living daylights out of me,' he lamented.
With no time to waste, he underwent surgery three days after the doctor's findings.
'So I was operated on three days later, and they lasered it off. Then I was in hospital for a day, and then home, and then no talking for over a week,' Overton recalled.
With the surgery being a success, it also came with a strict and challenging recovery protocol.
Overton was ordered not to talk for over a week.
For a man whose career revolved around communication, the imposed silence was a significant adjustment.
'It was interesting being mute,' Overton shared.
'If I went to get the milk, I'd write an email to myself, and it would say I'd have to show it to someone!'
As part of his recovery, Overton has been working with a speech pathologist to bring his voice back to its former strength and clarity.
As Overton focused on recovery, his wife, Jessica Rowe, broke the news of his health scare to the public.
'He's off work for a little longer at the moment after an ENT surgeon discovered a polyp on one of his vocal cords, which explains his very raspy voice over the holidays,' she wrote in a post last month.
This is not the first health challenge Overton has faced in recent times.
Months prior to his polyp surgery, he also underwent hip replacement surgery.
Rowe assured everyone that he was receiving plenty of 'tender loving care'.
