Is your pillow EXPIRED? Here's how to tell if you need to replace it
A Melbourne Mum, Chantel Mila, left the internet fueled with questions after posting a TikTok video to help the average Aussie to understand if their pillow has expired.
But wait a second, pillows? Expiring? We’ve grown used to the notion that when something “expires”, that renders it unusable. Food expires once it goes bad and the usual indicator usually involves a foul smell or taste. Appliances expire once they’re no longer in a condition to keep doing what they’re supposed to.
Which is why several of her viewers were confused by the term being used for pillows, as (I don’t know about you guys but) we usually use them for years. In fact, I can say, with confidence, that some people hold on to a pillow they’ve used since their childhood years to ignite nostalgia.
This mum, however, proves otherwise, saying that pillows need to be replaced after a certain time frame as they harbour dust, skin cells, and oils.
If you own a synthetic brand, she says it should be replaced as often as every six to twelve months, while if you have a down pillow, it’d last for about two to three years.
To check whether your pillow has expired, Chantel recommends a simple “bounce back” test. To do this, simply follow the three steps below:
- On a solid surface, fold your pillow in half.
- Hold it down for 30 seconds.
- RELEASE!
‘Pillows should bounce back if fresh,’ Chantel said.
However, if they don’t bounce back, it’s probably time for you to consider investing in a new one.
More than 220,000 people saw the video and said that they weren’t even aware that their PILLOWS had an expiration date and that they would definitely put their pillows up for the test.
‘This is such a good idea, I never knew you could do this,’ one commenter said, ‘Thanks for the tip - going to check mine right now.’
Chanel emphasised the importance of washing your pillows quarterly to make sure that they don’t build up on dust, skin cells, and oil.
According to this link, old pillows are actually a cause of skin breakouts. And while acne is more common among teenagers and young adults, seniors can also experience breakouts for a variety of reasons. Check out common reasons and how you can treat them here!
