As grandparents, we have a responsibility to ensure that our grandchildren are healthily consuming media. This means being aware of the content they are exposed to and making sure it is not instilling harmful behaviours in them.
One way to do this is to monitor the type of media and shows they consume. This includes making sure they are not watching too much television or being exposed to too much violence or mature content.
Keeping this in mind, we have alarming news to share with you.
A new teddy called 'Huggy Wuggy' is becoming a sensation among kids – but for all the wrong reasons.
Huggy Wuggy is the villain of the horror computer game called Poppy Playtime. A blue bear-like figure has long 'gangly arms, scarlet lips, and razor-sharp teeth’. In the game, a toy factory that has been abandoned is where players will encounter Huggy Wuggy.
Schoolchildren have been acting out the character's behaviours in the playground as well as in videos that have gotten past the filters on TikTok and Youtube.

Even parents have received a warning from one Adelaide elementary school, urging them to carefully supervise their kids' media exposure.
A letter sent out to the parents read: 'Huggy Wuggy, a blue teddy bear who sings songs about hugging and killing people, is appearing across TikTok, Roblox and Minecraft.'
If you think video games and short clips from social media are the only avenues for children to be exposed to this character, well, we've got some more bad news…
What's worse is that the popularity of the character has prompted some manufacturers to produce plush toy versions of the 'killer creature', making it widely available for purchase.
An eagle-eyed shopper discovered the 'disturbing' buy and posted photos of the toys to the popular Markdown Addicts Australia Facebook page.
One mum reacted to the post, saying: 'My daughter who is six has been having nightmares for the last two months because of these things.'
'We have taken YouTube off all devices and never want to see these things again.'

Another angry parent claimed that her daughter has been having trouble falling asleep as a result of the video game Poppy Playtime.
She shared: 'My daughter watched one episode as it came up as a preference on YouTube and for the past five months she won’t be alone in the house, won’t shower, sleep or even be by herself anywhere day or night.'
'The nightmares and anxiety this program has caused her has taken a toll on her.'
A concerned woman also joined in the conversation, claiming that her nephew had alarmingly started talking about 'killing' after watching Poppy Playtime for two days.
She warned: 'My nephew found it and started loving it, as soon as we found out what it was (after a day or 2) we lost our s*** over it and deleted YouTube from his access.'
According to a Reddit user, the toy was being sold to 'really young kids' in an 'actual children's toy store’.
The user wrote in a post: 'I know it’s Huggy Wuggy. I’m just kind of shocked?'
'It was at an actual kids toy store (aimed at younger kids, not teenagers).'

Others confirmed the availability of these plush toys in toy stores, saying that it is alarming that such a product was even allowed for distribution to begin with.
One user said: 'These are everywhere right now. Every festival and carnival, they are a hot item. Kids buy ‘em up not knowing what they are.'
'Parents that buy their kids s*** like this or let their kids watch this on YouTube etc are a disgrace,' one furious parent pointed out.
'My seven-year-old child introduced me to this after a kid in his class whispered to him he was going to chop him up into many pieces like Huggy Wuggy or words to that effect.'
'I googled it and this cartoon image came up. A few days later my son described to me the teddy the same kid had brought into class that the teacher removed from him and how terrifying it was. Again it was this.'
It's important to be aware of the nature of the characters and toys that our grandkids are playing with. Some of these may be violent or sexualised, and we need to make sure that our grandkids are not being exposed to too much of this.
Some grandparents may feel like they're out of touch with what's popular with kids these days, but it's important to be aware of the media that our grandkids are consuming. We need to make sure that the content is appropriate for their age and that they're not spending too much time in front of screens.
We need to be the ones to set the limits on what our grandkids are exposed to and make sure that they are getting a healthy mix of playtime, media time, and time spent with family and friends.
