Is it unreasonable to eat nuts... next to a person with a nut allergy?

AIBU, which stands for 'Am I Being Unreasonable', is the perfect platform for sharing your thoughts and opinions! So, for today's AIBU discussion, we have this story from Reddit/JetPlane_88:

Am I being unreasonable for eating nuts next to someone with an allergy on a plane?

'Had a bizarre situation today. I was flying from Hawaii to Florida. The stewards were walking around giving out mixed nuts.'

'The woman seated next to me said to the flight attendants that she didn’t want any because she is allergic to nuts and that there should’ve been a note in their system regarding not serving her nuts.'

'The attendant said in the survey she’d filled out for the airline regarding injury she had not indicated that it was an airborne allergy and only checked that she couldn’t ingest nuts. She stated they still shouldn’t have served them and she shouldn’t need to be that specific.'

'The attendants asked her if we needed to make an emergency landing or if she required medical attention. She said no.'

'
The woman asked me if I could not eat the mixed nuts. Everyone around us had an open plastic cup of mixed nuts. I told her I wasn’t sure how my eating them or not would help her in this situation. She said it was just a courtesy.'

'I told her (truthfully) I hadn’t eaten at all yet and needed to have something in my stomach to take a medication. I asked her if I could go to the back of the plane to eat the nuts then come back. She sort of rolled her eyes but said this was fine.'

'
When I came back she was complaining to the flight attendants about me and asking to be moved, specifically using the term “that a*****e.”'

'I feel badly that I didn’t handle the situation better. Was I unreasonable?'

Both my son and daughter have nut allergies and I haven't stopped eating them. I do however watch that nothing becomes cross contaminated.

I wouldn't sit next to them and eat them. My daughter is also allergic to seafood and had a reaction to the smell when I was cooking.

The woman should have asked if she could sit with an empty chair between them. I'm sure it would have been fine.

They need to be careful though with what they serve someone if they had already let them know about an allergy.

If anyone should move it should have been the one with the allergies 🤧

My son developed a nut allergy in adulthood. We were told it can happen at any age.
I eat nuts. However, I'm the same as Suzanne & wouldn't sit next to the person, due to cross contamination.
I still have peanut butter on toast but make sure I wash the knife straight away. I definitely wouldn't eat peanut butter next to either of them.

It's the same when our grandkids are here who have dairy allergies, if we have had dairy we won't kiss them and I'm wiping down benches constantly

If she didn't like it then she could move. This really pissed me off when my granddaughters attended Primary School. There was one child who had a nut allergy in their grade level and quite often not even in their class nor were they friends with her but because of her allergy NO child in the school was allowed Peanut Paste sandwiches or anything associated with nuts. My granddaughters usually went without a proper lunch as Peanut Paste was the only thing they would eat on their sandwiches. An entire school was penalized because of one child & nor would they move this child away from others during eating times as they claimed that that would be victimizing her, but I saw it as victimizing every other student and punishing them for this child's allergy. Have always wondered how this child was going to cope in the real world when she becomes an adult and realises that the world doesn't revolve around her every moment of the day.

That must have changed, as I'm sure there's no ban on any foods in schools these days. However, the school/teachers are trained in anaphylaxis management. In answer to your question, adults with a nut allergy cope well in work and social aspects. They are educated.
