Is a $25 pair of Kmart jeans better than designer ones? A shopper's comparison tells all!
Recently, Kmart has become the place to shop for fashion items for those with more refined (and budget-friendly) tastes regarding their wardrobe choices.
Kmart's $25 Mum Jeans have earned a place as a cult favourite among shoppers for a good reason–they look great, come in various sizes and cuts and, most importantly, are incredibly affordable.
But are they better than designer jeans?
Kmart shoppers claim the jeans are as great as other, much more expensive brands, to the point of one claiming: 'Literally the best jeans I’ve worn in my entire life'.
It's no small wonder why they've become so popular. Another customer left a review: ‘Several people in my family have these. We’re all different shapes, but somehow, these jeans fit us all perfectly! Would definitely recommend the value and quality, too.’
A third customer said: 'Nice sturdy jeans, comfortable material with just a little stretch, which is nice. Love how high-waisted & slightly baggy they are–feels like I’m in the ‘90s again.'
So what's the verdict? Are Kmart jeans the next best thing, or should we use designer brands to ensure quality?
Sydney journalist and mum-of-two Bianca Soldani set out to compare the two and reveal her findings.
Her first impression of the Kmart jeans was that, for $25, the jeans 'were surprisingly good'.
‘The cut is very flattering, it’s got a super high waistline–well above my bellybutton, which is great for tucking away the mum tum–and a slim leg, which has a bit of give around the thigh before tapering into an ankle-grazing hem.’
On the first feel, the denim felt soft and stretchy, although Bianca noted it felt like a 'this-material-is-cheap kind of way, rather than the buttery, costs hundreds of dollars quality from luxury denim brands’.
To the average bystander, however, they would appear no different.
Next, Bianca went to a high-end department store to compare Kmart's $25 jeans to designer alternatives, including those from Neuw, Nobody Denim and AG.
The closest comparison in style to the Kmart jeans was Neuw's Lola Mom Jeans ($179.95). Although the style was almost identical, the denim was thicker and firmer than the Kmart pair, with no stretch.
‘The only difference–and it’s a slight one–is that the leg sits a little straighter, giving a more relaxed look, [whereas] the Kmart pair is a little more figure hugging,’ Bianca noted.
The Nobody Denim Frankie Jean ($249) was again similar in style, with a slightly more relaxed cut and can only be described as ‘delicious, so soft and comfortable and flexible’.
Bianca shared: ‘But do I honestly think they feel $225 nicer than the Kmart pair, no, they really don’t–and they certainly don’t look that different either, at least not in a photo or from a distance.’
As for the AG pair, Mari Crop ($409), the style was slightly different from the Kmart pair, fitting much closer to the hips and thighs without the slouch of traditional '90s mum jeans.
‘The best thing about these jeans is the quality of the denim, which is just beautiful. It’s a 98 per cent cotton, two per cent spandex blend that is incredibly soft and flexible with a bit of stretch,’ Bianca stated.
The AG pair boasted the highest-quality denim for Bianca, far more superior than the Kmart jeans.
When comparing all four, there was no denying the quality of the Kmart pair was far lower than the other three.
Bianca said: ‘That said, for $25, the quality you’re getting is pretty d*** good–I can barely buy milk, bread and eggs for under that these days!’
Bianca's final opinion? If money were no object, she'd certainly be getting her hands on the Neuw pair. She praised their overall look and feel, noting that they were relaxed yet form-fitting–her reason for choosing mum-style jeans in the first place.
