Irwin Siblings illuminate The Project with insights and advocacy

Australia's wildlife conservationists, Robert and Bindi Irwin, graced the set of The Project with their presence.

They shared a heartwarming family bond and some groundbreaking insights that could alter our perception of animal intelligence and the ongoing battle against a prevalent women's health issue.

The sibling duo, who have carried on their father's legacy, the legendary Steve Irwin, came together in a rare television appearance that left viewers both touched and enlightened.

Robert, co-hosting the segment, took the opportunity to express his profound admiration for his sister Bindi.

She recently added 'author' to her impressive list of accomplishments with the upcoming release of her children's picture book, You Are A Wildlife Warrior, which will hit shelves in February 2025.

Bindi, dialling in from the iconic Australia Zoo and donning the famous khaki uniform, spoke candidly about her struggle with endometriosis, a debilitating condition affecting nearly one million Australian women.

The disease, which can severely impact fertility and cause intense pain, occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of it, often in the pelvic area.

Through her trials, Bindi has emerged as a staunch advocate for endometriosis awareness and continues her tireless work in wildlife conservation.

'You worked on this book in the throes of the endometriosis struggle you went through so publicly,' Robert said

'You came out the other side being an advocate for endo and a continuous advocate for the natural world. And this is a gift for the world.’

‘The younger generation, thank you for always approaching everything with such a sense of selflessness and absolute courage.’

‘You truly are amazing, Bindi.'

The inspiration for Bindi's book came from none other than her daughter, Grace.

'I started working on this just after Grace was born,' Bindi shared.

'I held this beautiful baby girl in my arms and went, “Oh my goodness, she’s going to have such an incredible life here at Australia Zoo running around with animals.”’

‘That’s where I got started right away. It’s been about three years in the making. It feels really good to be here.’

‘Grace has had a sneak peek of the book and she pretty much names all the animals in the book.'

The book promised to take readers on an enchanting journey through Australia Zoo, located on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.

Bindi hopes to cultivate a new generation of wildlife warriors who will cherish and protect our natural world.

‘I’m really thrilled to be able to share our work with wildlife and conservation with the next generation of warriors and hopefully inspire kids to love and appreciate our natural world,’ she stated.

During the segment, Bindi also shared a touching anecdote about her daughter's bond with her 'uncle Robert,' revealing that Grace's face lights up 'like Christmas' whenever he's around.

The siblings' affection was palpable. Bindi declared, 'Robert, I love you. You are a good brother,' and playfully dubbed him 'the fashionable Irwin' for his sharp suit and black shirt ensemble.

Terri Irwin was also present in the audience, proudly watching on as the 'Irwin fest' unfolded.

The family had recently celebrated Terri's 60th birthday, adding to the celebratory atmosphere of the program.

The Project also delved into new research indicating that animals possess 'complex intelligence,' including profound emotions and feelings.

Robert, a seasoned conservationist, emphasised that we have only begun to understand animal intelligence's depth.

He shared his experiences with crocodiles at Australia Zoo, noting their ability to recognise, learn, remember, and exhibit distinct personalities.

‘The way they show it is so different. Your dog or cat comes home with their tail wagging, but a croc is striking at you, trying to eat you.’ Robert stated.

'Animals, 100 per cent, unequivocally have feelings, emotions, and this emotional intelligence that is so deep, we’ve only just scratched the surface,'

In related news, Robert Irwin received a new honour with a native snail species, Figuladra robertirwini, named after him.

This makes him the third family member to have a snail named in their honour.

Scientist Dr Lorelle Stanisic chose the name to acknowledge Robert's passion for wildlife and photography, especially in the habitats where the snail resides. Read more about it here.
