Internal probe underway as cyber attack cripples Nissan Australia

In an era where technology is deeply integrated into our daily lives, cyber attacks have become a growing concern.

Recently, Nissan Australia, the Australian arm of the Japanese carmaker and its partner company Nissan Financial Services, have been grappling with the aftermath of a major cyber attack.

This incident has raised questions about the security of customer data and the resilience of the company's digital infrastructure.

The cyber attack, believed to have occurred around December 5, is believed to have severely impacted Nissan Australia's operations.

Key functions at the company's head office have been compromised, and even the company's email system has been rendered non-functional, according to reports.

A week after the attack, Nissan Australia resumed customer call centre operations, though details regarding the incident remain unclear.

'We are working tirelessly to investigate the cyber incident and restore our systems to support our dealers and customers,' a spokesperson for Nissan Australia said.

'This week we have re-opened our customer call centre, and we encourage customers to go to our website to find the latest information.'

Nissan Australia has allegedly not responded to requests for updates about potential delays in car sales or deliveries and disruption to dealer operations, including ordering parts or financial operations.

Reports also describe the information shared through website updates as ‘limited’.

'Nissan is working with its global incident response team and relevant stakeholders to investigate the extent of the incident and whether any personal information has been accessed,' the company stated.

'Nissan has also notified the Australian Cyber Security Centre and the New Zealand National Cyber Security Centre of the incident.’

While the investigation is ongoing, Nissan also encouraged its customers to be vigilant, including looking out for any unusual or scam activities across accounts.

The company has reassured customers that the systems outage will not adversely impact the credit rating of any of its Nissan Financial Services customers.

This isn’t the first time a cyber attack has hit a large business in Australia.

The 2022 Optus and Medibank data breaches opened a can of worms regarding the integrity of online security systems in the country, with millions of customers affected in separate incidents.

More recently, Pizza Hut Australia’s operations were also hit with a cyber-attack last September.

This hacking incident has led to a potential customer data breach, including personal details like delivery addresses and order specifics.

Pizza Hut Australia has stated that approximately 193,000 customers have been affected by the breach.

‘We have contacted these customers to advise them of the incident and the steps they can take to protect their information and avoid potential scams,’ a spokesperson for Pizza Hut Australia said.

The company has reported the incident to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and assured consumers that their operations were not affected by the incident.

I haven't been affected but all these cyber attacks are of grave concern when considering the companies in Australia who have been compromised & the information that has been extracted in those breaches.
