Incredible story of how a loyal dog saved its owner from a kangaroo attack

We here at the SDC love our furry friends, and we know that a lot of our members feel exactly the same way. After all, what’s not to love?

Dogs are loyal, fun, and are always happy to see you no matter what kind of day you’ve had. They become part of the family very quickly.

So, it should come as no surprise that we were absolutely touched by this story about a 71-year-old woman who was saved by her Rottweiler after being attacked by a kangaroo.

Pam Baldwin was out for a walk with her dog, Bundy, near Nail Can Hill on Sunday when she claimed that she felt something was behind her.

She glanced around, surprised to see the eyes and furry nose of a wild kangaroo staring back at her!

'The attack came out of nowhere,' she recalled.

'The next minute he's just gone bang with his two back legs.'

'I gave him a few choice words.'

Baldwin suffered serious scratches on her arm and bruising to her stomach as a result of the attack.

Bundy saw the assault and sprang in to save his owner.

The 71-year-old claimed that the kangaroo trapped her cherished dog after luring him into a dam and nearly killing him.

She remarked: 'Bundy is the fifth Rottweiler I've had, I wouldn't have another dog.'

'He almost lost his life for me.'

'He was within 20 to 40 seconds of being drowned’

Baldwin said that she was lucky that her friends fended off the creature with a long pole.

The long-time resident claimed that the local marsupials are starting to pose a serious threat to Nail Can Hill.

She admitted: [It was] 'A traumatic experience, someone needs to do something about it.'

'I went to the council and reported it. They didn't want to know me. It “wasn't their problem”'.'

'People take their children, ladies push their babies in a pram. What if it was one of them?'

The Albury City Council is yet to comment on the incident.

We've all heard the phrase 'man's best friend', but this story is a reminder that our furry buddies are so much more than just company – they're family, and sometimes even our saviours.

I know and understand Kangaroos after many many years of experience.
In 1960 -1964 the Kangaroo population BOOMED...
Born on 50,000 acres of Sheep and Cattle Property.in 1943, we were now suffering from the plaque of Kangaroos.
Truly, Kangaroos would be travelling along a fence line in THOUSANDS and you could sit an watch them for more than half an hour as they would filter past on their way to water in the latter part of the day or to feeding grounds of the evening and back to the hills in the heat of the day.
Were they a menace? YES they were
Were they dangerous ? In breeding season they were very dangerous.
The Huge Red Kangaroo was an extreme menace. Remember the Boxing Kangaroos that they took to America and actualy boxed with them in the Boxing Rings ...THAT WAS SO CRUEL AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN STOPPED IMMEDIATELY. THEY ARE ON OUT COAT OF ARMS AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN REVERED NOT FLAUNTED FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT OF AMERICANS.

Back to our story, In those days we would use a pick handle to a great anvantage and many kangaroos would see the pick handle AND RUN FOR COVER.
The ODD big buck would confront me and one good hit with the pick handle certainly changed his mind about attacking twice.
The Pick Handle DID damage a few seriously but it was for the protection of family and children unaware of the dangers..
FOR A 71 YEAR OLD LADY OR ANY LADY FOR THAT MATTER ... CARRY A CAN OF PEPPER SPRAY ..one shot will send ANY kangaroo packing whether he is in the middle of an attack or threatening an attack.
ONE SPRAY TO HIS FACE will even send a big kagaroo out of the terrority he is claiming.... If he wants more then give it to him.
If experienced grab him by the tail ... He is now hopelessly unable to attack.
If walking in the country be sure to take your dogs (preferably a blue heeler or bigger)
What happened to the Plagues of Kangooos in 1960s?
Nature took it's course, AND sent Cyclone Audrey in January 1964, which became a huge rain depression and swept through Central Australia and Southern Qld and Northern NSW .. right across to NZ.
In It's wake came the biggest plague of sandflies I had ever seen.
All animals suffered.. we built huge smoke fires from manure for our horses and sprayed our dogs with flyspray etc
THEY KILLED MILLIONS OF KANGAROOS JUST ON OUR PROPERTY ALONE
The Kangaroos have never seemed to have recovered...although they maybe making a comeback in the next few years... time will tell.
Whenever you are walking in the bush always take some type of protection. Wear protective loose clothing. and ENJOY your walks.
