IKEA's $5 mini gingerbread houses are back just in time for Christmas!

Christmas is just around the corner, and that means it's time to start getting into the festive spirit! One of the best ways to do that (in our opinion, anyway) is with some fun crafts with your friends or family.

One craft that has been gaining popularity in recent years is making (or simply decorating) gingerbread houses. And if you're looking for a reasonably priced gingerbread house kit to help you get started, then IKEA has you covered.

After its success last Christmas, IKEA has finally relaunched their much-anticipated $5 mini gingerbread house kit. The limited-edition Gingerbread House Mini Kit includes six mini houses and a simple guide that allows you to make your own masterpiece.

The miniature kit also comes in two sizes; the mini gingerbread houses cost only $5 each, while the larger size costs $6. You can also buy a separate gingerbread people kit for $5.50 to fill your houses with a family – or you can make a whole gingerbread town if you’re up for the challenge. String can be threaded through the houses so they can be used as festive window decorations (though we’re not sure how well this will fare in the Australian summer heat).

The Swedish retailer also sells frozen $4 gingerbread dough from the Vintersaga collection, which can be used to make decorations or furniture for your gingerbread houses.

The popular gingerbread houses can be seen up close in this TikTok video:

Most Aussies are eager to welcome back the product and said that they were excited to make their own gingerbread towns.

‘Get it every year, it’s the bomb,’ said someone.

‘I need to buy this,’ another commented.

However, some believe that the hassle to make their little gingerbread towns wasn’t worth the $5 price tag.

One traumatised user said: ‘I am not in any way exaggerating when I say I did this last year and ended up sobbing on my kitchen floor covered in egg white.’

If you’re looking to buy the limited-edition miniature gingerbread kits, but don’t know how to make icing for decorations, you need the following ingredients:
  • 250g icing sugar
  • 1 egg white
  • 5ml lemon juice/vinegar
You can begin by combining 250g of icing sugar and one egg white in a mixing bowl. Stir them together and slowly pour 5 ml of lemon juice or vinegar into the mixture. Combine the ingredients until a smooth, thick white paste appears. Then pour the icing into a piping bag, and decorate however you like!

Although gingerbread house-making might not be an Aussie tradition, it is a fun way to spend the holiday season with the family. You can even invite a little friendly competition by having a gingerbread house-making contest!

‘Doing this with a group as a Christmas activity would be perfect,’ one woman said.

I made a gingerbread house last year. It was the first and last time I will attempt it! What should have been a fairly easy, hassle free pastime ended up being a stressful major construction project. The damn roof kept sliding down the walls and no amount of icing "glue" kept it up. The walls ended up with a decided lean to them, it wouldn't have been too bad if they had all leant the same way! The box showed a couple of decidedly smug children decorating a perfectly squared off building, it made me mad! My nerves can't handle another attempt and if someone offers me one they might well end up wearing it!!;)

There's no worry about gingerbread not lasting as a decoration in Australia, as it just gets harder until it actually feels like eating hardiboard.
