Ice Man

Remember in the early 60s, when fridges were very expensive the ice man used to deliver in Kensington Victoria.

Used to get the Milko, Baker and soft drink seller home deliver in those days as well. Also a guy that sharpened knives and scissors. Then we had garbos running behind the truck!! Those buggers were fit!!

I used to know a lady, and her dad had a van full of library books and his round was in the Vic Park WA area. Not sure how he made a living outa that.

I remember the ice chest and the meat safe. Meat safe was a large square mesh box with an opening door. Usually metal, fly proof, hung in coolest part of house or in a breezeway. Meat was only kept in it for a couple of days at most depending how cold the weather was. Used for raw and cooked meat. A wonder we didn’t all die from food poisoning. As we lived out of town we didn’t get an ice delivery, the only time we had ice was after a trip to town. It was such a big solid block it lasted for almost a week in winter, 3-5 days in summer. After it melted we went without unless someone else was going to town. We didn’t refrigerate a lot of food then, just milk, cream and butter in summer. We used powdered milk if no ice, and cream out of a tin. After the ice chest we had a kerosene fridge for many years until we moved to a farm with electricity in the mid 1960s.

When I started work at the Port Kembla steelworks in 1971 there were no fridges in the mills and our office was inside the mill and we never had a fridge in the mill we had these big steel square units with taps on the front and the ice man came and topped up the ice every day it took about 6 big blocks of ice summer was great there was always icy cold water on tap
