One of the world's most recognisable sexual health companies has finally lifted the lid on the true origin behind its famous name — and it’s not what many people thought.
The revelation comes amid renewed discussions around sexual wellness and public health concerns.
Durex has long been a household name in sexual health, known for its condoms and lubricants.
Yet, for years, the true meaning behind the brand’s name was shrouded in mystery.
Many online speculated about its origin, with some believing it stood for 'durable sex' or 'during sex'.

A third user agreed, claiming: 'I think Durex stands for “durable sex”.'
There were even some who wondered if the name had anything to do with the brand's owner, with one asking, 'Have you ever wondered what durex stands for? Or you thought it’s the name of the brand owner?'
These theories were widespread, sparking plenty of playful debate.
However, it wasn't until recently that Durex cleared the air, revealing the real meaning behind its name.
The brand’s name is actually an acronym for 'DU-rability, R-eliability, and EX-cellence'.
Annelie Pennock, Durex’s category manager of personal care, confirmed this to news.com.au, explaining: 'Durex has always stood for DU-rability, R-eliability, and EX-cellence, both globally and in Australia.'
She continued: 'As the number 1 condom and lube brand worldwide, we’re proud to bring our 95 years’ experience leading conversations on sexual wellness and pleasure to encourage Aussies to have the best—and safest—sex possible.'
She further added: 'Our mission is to ensure people feel great about whatever they’re in to, and can feel safe while doing it. Here at Durex, we’re all about real sex that feels good and does good.'
The brand’s push to promote sexual wellness comes at a time when sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are on the rise in Australia.
The World Health Organization warns that untreated STIs can lead to severe health issues, including infertility, neurological and cardiovascular diseases, and an increased risk of HIV.
In 2022, Australia saw 6036 cases of syphilis, with 82 per cent of them being male.
Syphilis rates had more than tripled between 2013 and 2019, continuing to rise into 2022.
In the same year, there were 93,777 reported cases of chlamydia, most of which were among people aged 15 to 29 years.
Gonorrhoea cases also spiked, with 32,877 incidents reported, 71 per cent of them among males.
Durex’s recent transparency about its name aligns with its ongoing commitment to educating the public on safer sexual practices and the importance of protection.
