But that doesn’t mean seeing the world has to be a distant dream.
One Aussie couple is showing us just how creative we can be in pursuit of our travel dreams—and it hasn’t stemmed from a wealth of money, but rather a wealth of knowledge.
The couple from the Sunshine Coast, David and Anne, opted for an approach to their travels that many may be unaware of; house and pet sitting.
Talking to Yahoo News Australia, they said the main cost associated with travel isn't airfare; it's accommodation.
The duo have been exchanging their time for 'clean and comfortable' lodgings around the world, free of charge.
'To look after the property and, essentially, treat it like your own in return, you get to stay in the accommodation with access to the services provided, such as water, power, and WiFi,' they said.
From New Zealand to Italy, they’ve taken part in countless pet- and property-sitting gigs and mowed lawns to get their adventure fix.
Getting started on the house and pet-sitting journey appeared to be easier said than done for the couple.
They said, ‘[we] opted to create a profile on one of the many house-sitting platforms available online, as well as compiling a portfolio to showcase [our] capabilities and references’.
'Honesty is the most crucial trait for any successful house sitter,' they said.
According to the couple, being able to resist touching other people’s stuff and feeling up to the task of delivering on the owners’ needs for a decent connection is also key.
'It needs to work both ways,' says Anne.
The couple encourages others to take up their unique approach to international travel.
'We're really big on inspiring people and encouraging them to give it a go. It wedges open the curtains for you and you get to see a different way of life. It changes you.'
