How did we survive?

We survived because every food was fresh and no takeaways. We only had fish and chips on a Friday night because mum didn't like to cook, and dad's religion was to eat fish then.

We survived because there were no of expensive technical appliances of which we now believe we need all.
We survived because there were no over-priced brand names that serve the same purpose.
We survived because we pay for overpriced prepacked, pre-cooked foods.
We survived because we did not kill ourselves with ostentatious self-worth!

My Dad was a baker/pastry chef so he made the most delicious chocolate eclairs but was also great at the Sunday roast with lots of vegies. Mum made the best savoury mince I have ever tasted and her apple pie, rice pudding and bread and butter pudding were amazing. Food was simpler then and made from scratch - no frozen or pre made things.

Fish and chips were always eaten on Good Friday, no meat was allowed. Now a lot of younger people eat meat on Good Friday. Sunday was always baked dinner, usually chook dad chopped the head off and we all helped pluck and clean, terrible job, and mum cooked the best bakes vegies, and greens from our garden. We had dessert after, fruit preserved by our mum with home made custard, cream from grand pops house cows milk, or the most delicious ice cream made by mum. Baked rice, baked custard, syrup dumplings, apple, blackberry, mulberry, rhubarb and apple, gramma pies or crumble were all home grown and home made favourites in cooler weather. Dessert was a once a week and Christmas Day treat for us. I always helped mum with the cooking from a young age, I still love to cook.
