A thrilling Balinese adventure turned into a horror story for two Australians whose holiday in the tropical paradise ended with them bloodied and bruised in a local hospital, facing a staggering $65,000 in medical costs.

This grim tale is an urgent reminder for all travellers of the crucial importance of purchasing travel insurance before embarking on any overseas journey.

Scarlett Carruthers recounted the harrowing experience of the last night of their Bali trip that saw her boyfriend, Peter, and his friend, Izeah, become targets in a brutal stabbing outside a local mini-mart in Kuta.

'It was our last night in Bali so we decided to go for a meal and then get an early night ready for our flight home the next day, which didn't go to plan,' she said.

'My partner and his friend ended up being stabbed over 20 times in the face, neck, head, eye, chest, both arms and ear.'

‘Peter nearly lost his eyesight and now has to undergo cosmetic surgery, while Izeah suffered so much blood loss he was told by paramedics if he didn't get to the hospital within 30 minutes, he'd be dead,’ she added.

Yet, as they lay in dire need of surgical assistance, a mistake worsened their plight.

Neither man had secured travel insurance for their trip, an oversight which saw Peter confronted with a $50,000 bill while Izeah's expenses totalled $15,000.

Scarlett admitted they were ‘s***id’ and forgot to buy travel insurance when the hospital told them they couldn’t complete the surgery unless they paid upfront.

Compelled by desperation and the urgency of the situation, Scarlett took to crowdfunding, setting up a GoFundMe in hopes of raising enough to cover the medical fees, their continued accommodation, and rebooking of flights missed due to the incident.

While their appeals have captured the hearts of the public, with over $5,600 raised, it falls significantly short of their $30,000 target.

Travel insurance is an essential safeguard that protects travellers from unforeseen calamities, whether they be health-related emergencies, theft, or cancellations.

In a previous story, a traveller in Bali fell into an accident, leading to serious injuries and requiring an urgent hospital visit.

Thankfully, he had travel insurance to cover his medical costs, all thanks to his friends’ unfortunate experience abroad. You can read more about his story here.

Whilst I sympathize with the victim, there can be no excuse for not purchasing travel insurance.
My ex and I travelled a lot to Bali and the travel agent always made us take out travel insurance. Lucky we did we had a motorbike accident and had to pay a Balinese guy $5,000 for walking out in front of our bike we were more cut up than he was. Stupid prick they used to do it on purpose in the 70s and 80s.😊so yes insurance is important.

No sympathy whatsoever, anyone that can afford to travel overseas needs to be prepared to pay for insurance, otherwise don't go. Not sure why anyone other than their families would or should give money to their stupidity. Going to suggest it's not their first time there and not the first time they've played Russian roulette.

The attitude of, "It'll never happen to me", doesn't wear with me.

We have always taken out Travel Insurance, even for a short trip. Years ago on our first holiday to New Zealand on our own we had this. Luckily we did because my wife fell & hurt her wrist & needed medical assistance. Without Travel Insurance we would have been well out of pocket because she also needed physio treatment.
