The sound of construction vehicles has become a familiar soundtrack in Australian suburbs, but it's not just kitchen renovations and deck extensions driving the noise. A quieter revolution is taking place in backyards and spare rooms across the country, as record numbers of Australians are installing infrared saunas at home, with those over 60 leading the charge.

This isn't just about following celebrity wellness trends from overseas. It's about a generation of Australians who are redefining what it means to age well at home, investing in their health and independence in ways that would have seemed impossible just a few years ago.

In this Article

The numbers tell the story

The data is striking. Searches for sauna-related keywords have jumped by more than a third on realestate.com.au in the past year, while job platform Airtasker has recorded a 'dramatic spike' in sauna installation requests, with July 2025 marking the highest volume of sauna-related tasks in the platform's history.

'We're seeing a major spike in sauna-related tasks as Australians embrace the health and wellness trend in their own backyard,' Tim Fung, CEO of Airtasker, told news.com.au. But this surge isn't driven by luxury-seeking millennials - it's being powered by practical-minded Australians over 50 who've done the maths on gym membership fees and discovered something remarkable.

'What's really exciting is that saunas are no longer just a luxury as they are more accessible and easy to get installed'

Tim Fung, Airtasker CEO

The perfect storm driving this trend combines several uniquely Australian factors: our aging population's desire to remain independent at home, rising healthcare costs, and the long-term impact of recent years when accessing gyms and health facilities became complicated or impossible.

Why seniors are leading the infrared revolution

Research by The CareSide shows that 68 per cent of Australians want to age in place, with preferences varying by age group. Among younger adults aged 18 to 39, 70 per cent prefer home care, dropping to 66 per cent for those aged 40-64, and 52 per cent for those 65 and older. This preference for home-based wellness solutions helps explain why infrared saunas are particularly appealing to the senior market.

Unlike traditional saunas that can feel overwhelming, infrared saunas operate at lower temperatures than traditional saunas - typically between 120°F and 140°F (49°C to 60°C). This lower temperature makes them more comfortable for some people; however, they still promote a deep sweat and offer health benefits.

Dr. Melissa Young fromthe Cleveland Clinic explains that researchers have equated the physical response of an infrared sauna session to walking at a moderate pace, making it an ideal gentle exercise alternative for those who may struggle with high-impact activities.

The science behind the benefits

Recent research has provided compelling evidence for infrared sauna benefits that particularly appeal to older Australians dealing with common age-related health concerns.

Cardiovascular health

The findings suggest that frequent dry sauna bathing improves a variety of health parameters, with Finnish sauna bathing associated with reduced overall mortality and reduced incidence of cardiovascular events and dementia, at least in men. The most established clinical benefits include cardiovascular disease, as well as benefits for people with rheumatic diseases such as fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis.

Studies show that infrared saunas can help boost heart health and reduce blood pressure, with benefits including effects on systolic hypertension, congestive heart failure symptoms, exercise tolerance, and chronic pain. Importantly, no adverse events were reported in any of the studies.

Pain management and mobility

For many seniors dealing with arthritis and chronic pain, the research offers hope. Researchers found that infrared sauna therapy 'may be a promising method for treatment of chronic pain,' following a two-year study where people showed improved outcomes with the treatment.

A 2019 study in Clinical Rheumatology found that 24 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and spondylitis underwent daily infrared sauna sessions twice weekly for over a month. Researchers found that infrared saunas can provide short-term benefits in decreasing joint pain and stiffness.

Quality of life improvements

Perhaps most remarkably, a 2020 study by Geriatrics Gerontology found infrared saunas were the most effective method to improve older adults' quality of life. In the study, 67 participants aged 67-93 with varying degrees of frailty underwent 15-minute sauna sessions twice weekly for three months, with about 26 per cent of patients improving their frailty status.

Key Health Benefits for Seniors

  • Cardiovascular improvements equivalent to moderate exercise

  • Significant pain reduction for arthritis and chronic conditions

  • 26 per cent improvement in frailty status in clinical trials

  • Better sleep quality and stress reduction

  • No adverse events reported in research studies

The real cost of wellness at home

The financial case for home saunas becomes compelling when you break down the numbers properly. While the upfront investment ranges significantly, the long-term savings can be substantial.

Initial investment breakdown

The average cost for a quality prefab sauna unit is around $10,000, however prices can range from $3,000 for a basic setup to over $30,000 for larger or fully customised designs, depending on the type, size, and features you choose.

Here's what you can expect across different price points:

  • Budget option: $2,499 (Bunnings) for basic models
  • Mid-range: $2,500 for entry-level ceramic heater models, up to $8,000+ for Western Red Cedar infrared saunas with carbon fibre heaters and extras like sound systems
  • Premium: $10,000+ for top-quality models like Clearlight Sanctuary Full Spectrum units

Installation and running costs

Installation costs average $50 to $100 per hour for labor, with additional costs for electrical work if new wiring or circuits are needed. A dedicated circuit is typically installed for larger heaters.

The ongoing costs are surprisingly reasonable. Australian energy prices average around 28 cents per kWh, with infrared saunas consuming between 1.1 and 8.3 kWh at maximum temperature, so operating costs range from 42 cents to around $1.68 per session.

Return on investment

The mathematics become compelling when compared to commercial alternatives. Most 45-minute commercial sauna sessions cost upwards of $50, meaning having a sauna at home allows the freedom to use it for recovery, injury rehabilitation, or relaxation whenever needed. This investment in health and wellness can save money in the long term.

An entry-level home sauna priced at $10,000 can pay for itself within one year, and for regular users, it may take just six months to hit ROI.

Property value and investment considerations

Beyond personal health benefits, home saunas are proving to be smart property investments. Recent research by SDS Australia shows that properties with saunas command 15 per cent to 25 per cent more in rental premiums, with premium coastal locations like Tamarama seeing rentals with saunas commanding up to $540 more than typical weekly rental rates.

According to the National Association of Realtors, 42 per cent of homebuyers view a sauna as a highly desirable feature. By installing one, you can make your property more attractive to potential buyers, potentially increasing your home's resale value by 50-80 per cent.

The key is choosing wisely. A general guideline is to keep luxury upgrades within 10-15 per cent of your property's market value to ensure proportionate returns.

Smart Sauna Investment Tips

Research suggests high-quality installations recoup 50-85 per cent of costs at resale

Choose reputable suppliers with proper certifications and warranties

Consider placement carefully - outdoor saunas suit Australian lifestyle

Keep all receipts and certifications for future sale documentation

Consult local real estate agents about buyer expectations in your area

Safety first: Essential considerations for older users

While the research on infrared sauna benefits is promising, safety considerations become paramount for older Australians, particularly those with existing health conditions.

When to consult your doctor

Seniors should consider cardiovascular health, hydration needs, mobility and stability issues, and heat sensitivity. Those with heart disease, high blood pressure, or circulation issues should consult their doctor before sauna use. Seniors may be more prone to dehydration, and infrared saunas offer gentler heat than traditional steam saunas.

Elders may need to be cautious about sauna usage, specifically if they have existing health conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes. Though saunas can strengthen cardiovascular health in healthy individuals, elders may experience different effects, and certain health conditions may weaken the body's ability to regulate temperature.

Best practices for senior sauna users

Safety guidelines include starting with short sessions of 10-15 minutes, using moderate temperatures between 100-130°F (38-54°C), staying hydrated, listening to your body, having seating available, limiting use to 2-4 times per week, and avoiding alcohol or heavy meals before use.

As we age, our bodies become more sensitive to heat. The recommended maximum temperature for seniors is 130 degrees Fahrenheit (54°C), with sessions not exceeding 10-15 minutes. Take breaks as needed and have someone nearby while using the sauna.

The wellness trend that makes sense

This isn't just about following international wellness fads. The UK, Australia, and Japan are especially noteworthy markets in sauna development, with impressive health benefits including lower rates of cardiovascular and lung disease, plus a 60 per cent reduced risk for Alzheimer's and dementia in regular sauna bathers.

The global Sauna and Spa Market is expected to reach USD 146.05 billion in 2025 and grow at a CAGR of 7.43 per cent to reach USD 208.99 billion by 2030, but for Australian seniors, the appeal isn't about market trends - it's about taking control of their health and aging process.

Making the decision

For many Australians over 60, the decision comes down to three factors: health benefits supported by solid research, financial sense when compared to ongoing commercial fees, and the peace of mind that comes from having health and wellness support available at home.

When used properly and with safety measures in place, an infrared sauna can be a fantastic wellness tool for seniors. The gentle heat, deep relaxation, and circulation-boosting effects make it an ideal option for pain relief, flexibility, and stress reduction.

The key is approaching it thoughtfully - consulting with your healthcare provider, choosing quality equipment from reputable suppliers, and starting slowly to build confidence and comfort with the technology.

What This Means For You

As Australia's population continues to age, and as more of us seek to maintain independence and health in our own homes, the infrared sauna trend represents something larger than a lifestyle choice - it's about taking an active role in aging well.

The numbers, the research, and the growing community of satisfied Australian users all point in the same direction: for those who can manage the initial investment and have done their health homework, an infrared sauna might just be one of the smartest wellness decisions you can make.
