Hole-in-the-wall Gem lands the title for Australia’s Best Sanga

There’s a heartwarming tale about a small sandwich shop in Sydney that’s making waves!
It’s now hailed as the maker of Australia’s finest sanga’s, all thanks to the illustrious Wotif Uniquely Aussie Award for the ‘Best Sanga.’
And who’s the jury in this culinary courtroom? It’s none other than the good people of Australia who’ve cast their votes!
This gem of a sandwich spot goes by the name of South Dowling Sandwiches, comfortably nestled in the heart of Darlinghurst in Sydney. It’s been tickling the taste buds of its faithful customers for over two decades.
Some 14 years ago, Avi Labi and his dedicated team took the helm, determined to breathe new life into the place.
Avi Labi, the owner, places great emphasis on using top-quality ingredients for their sandwiches.
He shares, ‘Everything is made to order. Everything is made in-house, from the bread to the chicken that we receive fresh daily–-we cut it and we tenderise it.’
Now, let’s turn our attention to one of their beloved classics—’The B*atch’, a name lovingly dedicated to Labi’s daughter.
‘It’s spicy, like my daughter’, he said, ‘but it’s so, so, so good, so delicious, one of my favourite sandwiches.’
Just picture this: chilli chicken, red pesto, herb mayo, lettuce, rocket, pickles, red cabbage, bocconcini, and their famous caramelised carrots. All for the price of $15!
Labi proudly states, ‘We’re known for our caramelised carrots, there’s no one in Australia that does it. Many people [have] tried to copy it, but they’re not even coming close to it. People love it.’
Now, let’s talk about another fan favourite, shall we? They call it ‘The Hugo’. It’s a schnitzel sandwich, featuring a delightful blend of herb mayo, fresh lettuce, tasty cheese, Roma tomato, cucumber, and those renowned caramelised carrots.
Labi credits its ongoing success to a dedicated team and its loyal customers who keep returning for more.
And, just so you know, South Dowling Sandwiches isn’t confined to Darlinghurst alone. They’ve also set up shop in Alexandria and Millers Point.
And guess what? Labi hints that they might be considering the idea of expanding their sandwich haven beyond Sydney, with Melbourne on the horizon.
Daniel Finch, who heads Wotif, shared the core idea behind the Uniquely Aussie Awards—a heartfelt celebration of the very best businesses that grace our beautiful country.
These awards offer an opportunity for everyday people to shine a light on their most beloved businesses, with one amassing the most nominations emerging as the victor.
In this year’s lineup of winners, we have The Cupping Room in ACT, receiving praise for their outstanding flat white coffee, Felons Brewing Co in Queensland, rightfully crowned as the best brewery, and the Western Australian Botanic Garden in Perth’s Kings Park, earning the prestigious title of best botanic garden.
Finch aptly noted, ‘These awards are all about acknowledging what matters most to our fellow Aussies–be it the delight of scrumptious food and beverages or the serene splendour of our natural wonders. These are the simple joys that transform local journeys into cherished memories.
In the end, it’s a story of culinary mastery, dedication, and the simple joys that enrich our lives, reminding us that even a humble sandwich can take us on a delightful journey of taste and discovery.
We’d love to know which cafe, deli or restaurant you consider to have the ‘Best Sanga’ in town! Share with us your sanga stories in the comments below! We’d love to hear all about your favourite Sanga regardless of where in Australia you’re located!
