Hit series faces major change after unexpected exit leaves viewers speculating

After a quarter of a century gracing our screens, Channel Nine presenter has announced he’s hanging up his TV boots—at least for now.

For many of us who’ve spent years waking up to his familiar face on Weekend Today or catching his expert sports coverage, this news might feel a bit like losing a favourite neighbour who always had a friendly wave and a good story.

Clint Stanaway, now 42, broke the news on Tuesday, revealing that the relentless pace of juggling both television and his burgeoning radio career had finally caught up with him.

‘It’s been a huge workload juggling both TV and being part of the Melbourne Nova breakfast team over the past couple of years,’ he shared.

‘I am passionate about my newfound love for radio and have decided to give it priority moving forward, while I also look to strike a better work/life balance.’

For those who’ve followed Clint’s journey, his rise through the media ranks is a classic tale of hard work and dedication.

He started out in the news library at Melbourne’s GTV9 in the early 2000s—a humble beginning that many of us can relate to, remembering our own first jobs and the nerves that came with them.

From there, he sharpened his reporting skills at WIN Television in Bendigo before returning to 9News Melbourne, where he made his mark as a news and court reporter.

Clint’s career is a testament to the power of persistence. Over the years, he’s covered some of the world's biggest sporting events, from the Olympic Games to the Melbourne Cup, and eventually became the Weekend Sport Presenter for 9News Melbourne.

His ability to bring the excitement of live sport into our living rooms made him a household name and a trusted voice for sports fans across the country.

But as many of us know, even the most rewarding careers can take their toll. Clint’s decision to step back from television is a reminder that sometimes, prioritising our health and happiness is the bravest move of all.

‘I’ve always treasured my job, be it on 9News, as co-host of Weekend Today or as part of the Wide World of Sports team,’ he reflected.

‘I’ve met so many wonderful people, shared some incredible stories and experienced the most unforgettable moments. The thrill of live television is so addictive, it’ll never leave me.’

He was quick to reassure fans that this isn’t necessarily a permanent goodbye.

‘While I step away with a heavy heart, I suspect it won’t be forever. The Nine family has been so good to me, and for that I’ll be forever thankful.’

Clint’s next chapter is already well underway. In March 2024, he was announced as the newsreader for Nova 100’s new breakfast team, joining Jase Hawkins and Lauren Phillips.

The trio wasted no time making waves, even poking fun at themselves in a cheeky Married at First Sight-inspired video with relationship expert John Aitken.

The playful skit saw Clint introduced as the ‘third’ in the breakfast show relationship, much to the amusement of fans.

For those of us who’ve watched Clint’s career blossom, his move to radio feels like a natural progression. Radio offers a different kind of connection—one that’s more intimate and immediate.

And for Clint, it’s a chance to focus on a new passion while finding that elusive work/life balance so many of us strive for, especially as we get older and our priorities shift.

What does this mean for Channel Nine and the shows we love? While it’s always sad to see a familiar face move on, it’s also an opportunity for fresh talent to step up and for the network to evolve.

If Clint’s career has taught us anything, it’s that change can lead to exciting new adventures—for both the presenter and the audience.
